11kW Wallbox Buyer's Guide: Finding the Right EV Charging Solution

The purchase of an electric car raises a key question: What is the most efficient, safe, and cost-effective way to charge the vehicle at home? The range of charging solutions is vast, from permanently installed wall-mounted stations to flexible mobile charging cables. This article serves as a guide, introducing various concepts and models to provide you with an informed basis for purchasing an 11kW wallbox or a comparable charging solution.

What to Look for When Choosing an 11kW Charging Solution

Before you decide on a model, it's helpful to define your own requirements. The following points highlight the most important distinguishing features and functions.

Stationary Wallbox or Mobile Charging Solution?

The first fundamental decision concerns the form factor.

  • Stationary Wallbox: A charging station permanently mounted on a wall is the classic solution for homeowners. It is connected directly to the home's power grid and provides a permanently available, streamlined, and often high-performance charging infrastructure. Models with smart features like a wallbox with app control or the capability for PV surplus charging are usually found in this category.
  • Mobile 11kW Wallbox: A portable EV charging cable, often referred to as a mobile wallbox, offers maximum flexibility. It requires no fixed installation and can be used in various locations with a suitable power connection (e.g., a CEE industrial socket). This makes it ideal for renters, people with multiple residences, or for travel.

Smart Features: App Control, Solar Surplus Charging, and Load Management

Modern charging solutions can do more than just transfer power. Smart features offer convenience and help reduce costs.

  • Wallbox with App Control: Allows you to monitor and control the charging process via a smartphone. You can schedule charging times, view power consumption, adjust charging power, or lock and unlock the station remotely.
  • Wallbox for PV Surplus Charging: This feature is particularly interesting for owners of a photovoltaic system. The wallbox communicates with the home's energy system and charges the vehicle specifically when surplus solar power is being produced. This maximises self-consumption and lowers electricity costs.
  • Wallbox with Load Management: In households or buildings with multiple high-consumption devices (or multiple EVs), dynamic load management prevents the main electrical connection from being overloaded. The charging power is automatically reduced when other appliances require a lot of electricity.

Connection and Charging Power: Schuko, CEE, and the Type 2 Standard

The charging power depends significantly on the electrical connection.

  • Charging an EV from a domestic socket (Schuko): Charging from a conventional household socket is possible, but at a maximum of 2.3 kW to 3.7 kW, it is very slow and should only be considered an emergency solution, as home wiring is not designed for such a continuous load.
  • CEE Socket: Red CEE industrial sockets (three-phase power) enable significantly higher and more stable charging performance. A 16A CEE charging cable can deliver up to 11 kW on three phases and is a common connection type for powerful mobile chargers.
  • Type 2 Charging Cable: The vehicle-side connector is standardised in Europe. Nearly all modern EVs and wallboxes use the Type 2 plug, which ensures high compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between an 11kW and a 22kW wallbox? An 11 kW wallbox charges at up to 11 kilowatts and is perfectly sufficient for most use cases, such as overnight charging. In Germany, it only requires notification to the grid operator. A 22 kW wallbox charges twice as fast but must be approved by the grid operator, which is not always granted. Furthermore, many EVs can only charge at a maximum of 11 kW on the AC side anyway.

Can I install a wallbox myself? No. In Germany, for safety and warranty reasons, the installation of a hardwired wallbox must be carried out by a qualified electrician. You can connect mobile chargers yourself to an existing and tested socket (Schuko or CEE).

Does every wallbox fit every EV? In Europe, the Type 2 charging cable has become the standard for AC charging. Therefore, almost all wallboxes and charging cables available here are compatible with common electric cars and plug-in hybrids. However, the maximum charging speed is always determined by the weakest link in the chain: the wallbox, the charging cable, or the vehicle's on-board charger.
