The search for a new mattress can be complex. Anyone suffering from restless sleep, tension, or back pain will inevitably come across the term 7-zone mattress during their research. But what does it actually mean, and how do you find a model that meets your personal needs?
This guide is designed to provide clarity. We'll explain how a 7-zone structure works, highlight key purchasing criteria like material and firmness level, and present a selection of models designed for different requirements. Our goal is to give you an informed basis for your decision, so you can find the right mattress for restful sleep.
An ergonomic mattress with a 7-zone design is engineered to provide the body with targeted support. To find the right model, three aspects are particularly important.
The core is the primary determinant of the mattress's feel and sleep climate. The most common types are:
The firmness level indicates how firm a mattress is. The wrong choice can negate the ergonomic benefits of a 7-zone structure. Common firmness levels are:
An H3 mattress is a popular choice that is suitable for a wide range of people. However, always pay attention to the manufacturer's specific recommendations, as these can vary. Your sleeping position (side, back, stomach) also plays a role in choosing the right firmness.
For health-conscious buyers, families with children, or allergy sufferers, being free from harmful substances is a crucial criterion. The Oeko-Tex certified seal (e.g., Standard 100) ensures that all components of the mattress have been tested against a long list of harmful substances and are harmless to health.
Based on the criteria mentioned, we have compiled a selection of mattresses that cater to different sleep needs.

A 7-zone mattress is divided into seven transverse zones that are either firmer or softer. These zones are symmetrically arranged and tailored to different parts of the body: head, shoulders, lumbar, pelvis, thighs, lower legs, and feet. The goal is to allow heavier body parts like the shoulders and pelvis to sink in deeper, while lighter areas like the waist are supported. This promotes a straight alignment of the spine and an ergonomic sleeping posture.
In principle, 7-zone mattresses are suitable for all sleeping positions. However, side and back sleepers benefit the most. For side sleepers, the softer shoulder and pelvic zones ensure the spine remains straight. Back sleepers experience relief in the lower back thanks to the firmer lumbar support. Stomach sleepers should ensure they choose a mattress that is not too soft to avoid sagging in the pelvic area (lordosis).
The firmness level should primarily be chosen based on body weight, but it serves only as a guideline. An H3 mattress is often recommended for people between 80 and 110 kg. However, body height and weight distribution are also important. A tall, heavy person may need a different firmness level than a short person of the same weight. Ultimately, personal preference is also a deciding factor. The mattress should be firm enough that the spine forms a straight line when lying on your side, and soft enough that no pressure points are created.
