Who are the different robots suited to?

Families looking for conversation and play

You want to play together with a robot that moves and speak to it in German. What matters is which language modes and games are actually available, not a general promise about AI. In an individual German-language review, GameStar documented German-language interaction with Loona.

Households that prioritise privacy during play

You’re looking for responses to touch and movement, but want to limit camera, microphone and app use as much as possible. Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen recommends not leaving microphones and cameras running all the time when using smart toys. Check whether local controls meet your needs for play.

Households short on setup time

You want to use the robot regularly without charging, signing in or installing updates becoming a recurring family project. Look for a straightforward charging process, and check which accounts and services are needed for the features you want.

What should you consider when choosing?

Connected interaction and conversation

A good fit if: You want German-language conversations, gestures or movement-based games to be part of playing together. In an individual review dated 30 January 2026, GameStar documented these features on Loona.

Consider: The camera, microphone, app and online services make the specific permissions and data terms an important part of your buying decision.

App- and camera-assisted control

A good fit if: You want to control the robot together using a smartphone or use camera-assisted interaction, without expecting free-flowing conversation to be its main feature.

Consider: App control doesn’t automatically mean that cloud services or sensors can be switched off. Check each feature individually.

Touch controls and remote control

A good fit if: Petting, remote control, dancing or set movements are enough to meet your needs for play. Lexibook lists these features for the Power Puppy DOG01.

Consider: The documented play features don’t establish that it can hold free-flowing AI conversations or interact autonomously using AI.

What matters What to check before buying Who will find this particularly important?
Data and sensors Check app permissions and the separate settings for the camera, microphone and online voice services. If a camera or microphone will be used in my home, I want to be able to see and limit access for each feature. Around 31% of consumers put privacy and controllable sensors first.
Conversations and games Confirm German-language conversations, voice commands and app menus separately; check which games you want and how to control them. If I want to play together and perhaps speak German, the actual interaction matters more to me than a general promise about AI. Around 31% of consumers prioritise conversations and suitable games.
Movement and charging Distinguish active play time from standby time and check whether a charging dock is included. If movement is a deciding factor, ask for a demonstration in a home setting like yours. If the robot will be used regularly, I want to know how often it needs charging or intervention. Around 19% of consumers put movement, battery life and charging at home first.
Accounts and services Check which accounts and online services are required, whether there are any usage limits, and what update commitments apply to the specific offer. If I want to use the robot long term, I want to understand the setup involved and which services are needed in advance. Around 19% of consumers prioritise predictable account and online service requirements, and software support.

Which assumptions should you avoid?

  • Assuming “as local as possible” means “completely offline”

A general statement from a manufacturer doesn’t explain where voice, camera or app data goes for every feature. KEYi Tech says that processing is as local as possible; its general privacy policy also describes the use of external service providers.

Check data processing and options to switch features off individually. A general privacy policy isn’t a substitute for doing this.

  • Treating a list of sensors as a safety guarantee

Documented navigation sensors and an automatic charging feature don’t guarantee that the robot will move without problems around every obstacle or on every staircase.

If autonomous movement matters, ask for a demonstration in the kind of home environment it’s intended for.

Depending on your home, extra setup and supervision may be needed.

  • Assuming an optional app offers the same features when not using it

WowWee says Dog-E can be used with or without the app, but personalisation and multiple profiles are app features.

Before buying, make a note of which features you want to control directly on the robot and which can only be controlled through the app.

Extra personalisation may require smartphone setup.

  • Assuming a USB cable means automatic charging

The Lexibook Power Puppy DOG01 instructions describe charging the robot’s battery manually. The remote control also requires separate batteries.

Check the charging process for the exact model and make sure it suits how you plan to use it.

The remote control requires additional AA/LR6 batteries, and the robot’s battery must be connected manually for charging.

Which brands are worth considering?

KEYi Tech

Loona is an example worth considering for conversations, mini-games, and face and gesture recognition. The features described apply to Loona, not all KEYi Tech products.

  • In an individual review dated 30 January 2026, GameStar documented German-language interaction and autonomous charging on Loona.
  • The manufacturer’s statement that processing is as local as possible doesn’t confirm that all processing takes place locally. In 2026, Cybernews reported that the Loona Android app it examined declared background location permission. This doesn’t prove that location data is actually transmitted with every installation.

Lexibook

Power Puppy DOG01 is a robotic play companion with a remote control and programmed movements. This description applies to model DOG01, not to all Lexibook products.

  • Lexibook lists programmable dances and movements for DOG01; head-touch responses and remote control are described as specific ways to play.
  • The manufacturer’s information doesn’t establish that it can hold free-flowing AI conversations. The instructions describe manual charging and additional AA/LR6 batteries for the remote control.

WowWee

Dog-E is an example of a robot for responsive play, with optional personalisation through an app.

  • WowWee says Dog-E can be used with or without the app, and that multiple profiles are available in the app.
  • This information confirms neither free-flowing conversations in German nor the privacy terms for a specific app installation. An optional app doesn’t mean the robot can be used without any data processing.

Frequently asked questions

Can Loona really speak German?

Yes. German-language interaction with Loona was documented in an individual German GameStar review dated 30 January 2026. If all three matter to you, ask for separate confirmation of German conversations, voice commands and the language used in the app menus.

Does a location permission prove that an app transmits my location?

No. Cybernews reported that the Loona Android app it examined declared background location permission. This is a reason to check the permissions for the specific app version, but it doesn’t prove that location data is actually transmitted when you install it.

What does an automatic charging dock mean in everyday use?

Loona has documented features for returning to its charging dock and charging automatically. This doesn’t prove that it will return successfully from every room. If this feature is a deciding factor, ask for a demonstration using the intended charging spot and the conditions in your home.

Are robot pets with cameras or microphones banned in Germany?

Not simply because they have a camera or microphone. Section 8(1) TDDDG concerns telecommunications equipment which, by its form, purports to be another object or is disguised as an everyday object and which, because of these circumstances or the way it works, is particularly suitable and intended for secretly listening to others or secretly recording images of them. This doesn’t amount to blanket confirmation that an individual model is permitted.

Which updates matter when buying a connected robot?

For goods with digital elements, the updates agreed in the contract and required for the goods to conform to the contract are relevant under the conditions set out in section 475b of the German Civil Code (BGB). The applicable period depends, among other things, on the type and purpose of the goods and the contract; this doesn’t amount to a blanket promise of lifetime support.
