Buying an air bed with a pump: how to choose the right size, pump type and model

An air bed with a pump can be used as a guest bed, a camping bed or a temporary place to sleep. At first, choosing one seems straightforward: pick a size and colour, then place your order. In practice, though, a few details can make a model that looks suitable turn out to be inconvenient. The sleeping surface matters, but so do the pump type, bed height, weight capacity and storage requirements.

Common mistakes when buying an inflatable bed

1. “With pump” doesn’t automatically mean “electric”

Some products come with a hand pump only. This may be enough for occasional use, but it takes more time and effort than an integrated electric pump. If you regularly set up an air bed for guests, check carefully whether it comes with an integrated pump, a USB pump or just a separate hand pump.

2. Confusing the sleeping surface with the overall width

A double air bed that is 152 cm wide generally has room for two people. In smaller rooms, you’ll also need to consider the overall dimensions and height. A raised air bed is more convenient to get on and off, but takes up more storage space. For a tent, you’ll also need to check the width of the sleeping area inside.

3. Overlooking the maximum weight capacity

The permitted weight capacity should account for more than just one person’s body weight. For an air bed for two, consider the weight of both people, as well as any additional load. Figures such as 136 kg or 272 kg maximum weight capacity are product specifications and should not be exceeded. Jumping, standing or placing weight on one spot can put more strain on the seams and material than lying evenly across the bed.

Key things to consider before you buy

Size and number of people

A single air bed measuring around 99 × 191 cm is suitable for one person. A double air bed measuring approximately 152 × 203 cm gives two people a shared sleeping surface. Consider your height when choosing: a length of 203 cm gives taller people a little more room.

If you’re buying one for guests at home, think about where you’ll put it. Measure the space, leaving room around it for walls and furniture. For a camping air bed, weight, packed size and a suitable power supply are also important.

Height and getting in and out

A height of 25 to 30 cm keeps the packed size relatively compact. A raised air bed measuring 36 or 42 cm high can make getting in and out easier in many situations. However, it may be heavier to carry and take up more cupboard space.

Height alone doesn’t guarantee comfort. Choose a bed that suits how you plan to use it: a higher model can be practical for occasional overnight stays in the living room, while a lower, lighter bed may be better for camping.

Pump type and power supply

An integrated 220–240-volt pump needs a standard mains socket, so it’s best suited to indoor use. An air mattress with an integrated pump can be set up without any extra accessories. A USB pump, on the other hand, needs a suitable power source, such as a USB adapter or power bank. Check the current rating specified by the supplier and don’t use damaged cables.

A hand pump doesn’t need electricity and can be useful when camping, but it generally takes longer to inflate the bed. Treat the manufacturer’s stated inflation time as a guide, as it can vary depending on the power source, ambient temperature and how firm you want the bed.

Material, surface and care

Many inflatable mattresses are made from PVC or vinyl. A flocked top can feel more comfortable and helps stop bedding from slipping easily. Internal Fiber-Tech or similar fibre structures help the bed retain its shape, but they don’t replace the need to stay within the weight limit.

Before setting up the bed, make sure the ground is clean and free from stones, sharp edges, pet claws and other pointed objects. After use, store the bed completely dry and protected from direct sunlight, moisture and high temperatures.

Setting up, using and storing your air bed

  1. Place the air bed on a flat, clean surface and remove any pointed objects.
  2. Use only the specified power source or pump.
  3. Inflate the bed only until it reaches the firmness you want. Over-inflating it can put strain on the seams and material.
  4. If needed, top up the bed after its first use, as the material may settle.
  5. Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth and leave it to dry completely.
  6. Open the designated valve to deflate the bed, fold it without creating sharp creases and store it in a dry place.

Air bed with pump FAQs

How long does it take to inflate an air bed?

It depends on the pump type and model. The products listed state an inflation time of around 2 minutes for the single bed’s USB pump, around 4 minutes for the integrated mains pump and around 5.5 minutes for the hand pump supplied. These times are estimates.

How long does an air bed last?

There’s no set lifespan that applies to every air bed. It depends on how often it’s used, the surface it’s placed on, the weight it supports, how it’s stored and how well it’s cared for. Storing it in a clean, dry place and keeping it away from pets, sharp objects and direct heat can help protect the material.

What power source does an air bed with a USB pump need?

A USB pump needs a compatible USB power source. Depending on the model, this could be a USB adapter, a power bank or a laptop. Check the stated current rating before buying and use only undamaged cables.
