Buying an Air Fryer: Which Size, Power and Features Really Matter in Everyday Use

An air fryer can cook chips, vegetables, chicken, fish or reheated meals with little oil. But not every appliance suits every household. All too often, exaggerated capacity claims, impractical cleaning or confusing programmes lead to the wrong purchase.

This buying guide shows what households in Germany should look out for before buying, and which models suit different usage situations.

Three Common Pitfalls When Buying an Air Fryer

1. Capacity is confused with actual portion size

A figure like 5, 7 or 9 litres describes the internal volume. However, for even hot air circulation, the frying basket must not be completely overfilled. A smaller air fryer can be more efficient for one person, while a larger appliance requires fewer refills for family portions.

What really matters, therefore, is not just the litre capacity, but also:

  • the usable basket area,
  • the number of portions you need,
  • the shape of the frying basket,
  • the counter space available in your kitchen.

2. A high wattage does not guarantee a better result

Power affects the heating time and potential temperature stability, among other things. But it is not the sole indicator of quality. Airflow, the heating element, basket shape and the amount of food all influence the cooking result.

A compact 2-litre model with 1,150 watts can be ideal for a single person. For two separate dishes or larger quantities, however, appliances with two chambers and a higher total volume are more practical.

3. 'Oil-free' does not automatically mean low-fat for every dish

An oil-free fryer works with hot circulating air and needs little or no extra oil for many foods. However, ready-made products such as breaded snacks or frozen chips can already contain fat. The term 'healthy air fryer' should therefore be understood as a search term, not a medical claim.

The Key Buying Criteria at a Glance

Capacity and Design

For a one- or two-person household, around 2 to 3.2 litres is often sufficient. Couples and small families can look at 4 to 5 litres. An XXL air fryer with around 7 to 10 litres is suitable for larger portions or several people, but takes up more space and can be unnecessarily large for small quantities.

A dual-zone air fryer or an air fryer with two chambers allows you to cook different foods separately. Features like 'Sync Finish' are designed to coordinate different cooking times so that both baskets finish at roughly the same time. Before buying, check whether the chambers can be controlled independently for temperature and time.

Temperature Range and Controls

A temperature range of 80 to 200 °C covers typical uses such as reheating, baking, roasting and air frying. Some digital air fryers also offer lower temperatures, for gentle warming or drying. A timer with at least 60 minutes is sufficient for everyday use, provided the instruction manual does not specify longer cooking times.

A touchscreen looks tidy, but is not necessarily more practical for everyone than a dial. Look out for:

  • a clearly readable display,
  • easily identifiable buttons,
  • simple manual settings,
  • understandable programme symbols,
  • an audible signal or reminder to turn food.

Cleaning, Materials and Safety

A dishwasher-safe frying basket and removable parts reduce cleaning effort. Even so, the coating should only be treated with suitable sponges and cleaning agents. Abrasive cleaners and wire brushes can damage the surface.

Before buying, you should also check for CE marking, a clear instruction manual in German, details of the responsible person in the EU, and the correct mains voltage of 220 to 240 volts. The housing and electrical components must not be immersed in water. During operation, the air inlet and outlet need sufficient clearance from walls and flammable objects.

FAQ about Air Fryers

How much space does an air fryer need?

In addition to the external dimensions, you should allow at least around 10 to 30 centimetres of clearance from walls, wall units and flammable objects. The exact requirements are given in the relevant instruction manual. The air outlet must not be blocked, as hot air and steam escape during operation.

How long does an air fryer last?

The lifespan depends on how often you use it, how you clean it, the condition of the coating and careful handling. Avoid overfilling, sharp kitchen utensils and harsh cleaning agents. If the coating is damaged, the cable is defective or there is unusual smoke, the appliance should not be used any further.

Does an air fryer use less electricity than an oven?

Electricity consumption depends on power, running time, preheating and portion size. A small cooking chamber can be practical for single portions, while a large oven can be used more efficiently for several trays. For a fair comparison, multiply the power in kilowatts by the operating time in hours. You should only take ad-hoc promises about energy savings into account if specific comparison conditions are given.
