An air mattress can serve as a guest bed, a camping solution or a space-saving sleeping option. However, not every budget-friendly offer leads to the right purchase decision. Products are often promoted on the basis of fast inflation times, particularly high weight capacity or versatile uses. What really matters, though, is whether the dimensions, pump, material and intended use fit your everyday life.
A two-person air mattress measuring 152 × 203 cm needs considerably more floor space than a narrow single model. In small flats, student rooms or tents, you may also need a few centimetres of clearance from walls and furniture. So check not only the sleeping surface, but also the available space when the mattress is inflated.
With an airbed that comes with a pump, the pump may be built-in, USB-powered, or included as a separate accessory. These differences have a significant impact on how you use it:
The maximum weight capacity is a technical limit, not a guarantee of sleep quality. For a two-person air mattress, you should consider the total permitted load for both people, including any bedding. Also, the material may stretch a little after first use, so a careful top-up may be needed.
For a single-person air mattress, widths between around 73 and 99 cm are common. A width of 76 cm saves space, while 99 cm offers more room to move. For a two-person air mattress, 137 × 191 cm or 152 × 203 cm are standard sizes.
Height also matters: models that are 22 to 25 cm tall are generally easier to transport and store. A height of 30 to 33 cm can make getting in and out easier, but takes up more storage space and is bulkier when inflated.
PVC or vinyl is used in many inflatable mattresses. Look out for:
An air mattress is not designed for sharp stones, thorns, glass or rough ground. For camping, a suitable groundsheet is recommended.
A fast inflation time is only practical if you have a power supply where you'll be using it. For a guest bed at home, a 220–240 V model can make sense. For festivals, van trips or remote campsites, a USB pump or a model with a hand pump is a better choice.
Also check the weight, packed size and whether a carry bag is included. A lightweight single model at 1.45 kg is much easier to transport than a 7 kg double bed.
Why this product fits the profile: This single model measuring 191 × 73 × 22 cm is designed for one person and can be used both indoors and outdoors. Its weight of 1.45 kg makes it easy to transport.
The product details clearly state the number of people, dimensions and intended uses. A separate pump is required, which can be taken into account before purchase.
Compact single size, PVC construction and repair kit included.
Why this product fits the profile: This raised double bed is designed for two people and offers a generous 152 × 203 × 33 cm sleeping surface for guests indoors.
The built-in electric pump is clearly stated as 220–240 V. This removes any uncertainty about compatible pump accessories, as long as a mains socket is available.
Inflation and deflation function, flocked surface, maximum weight capacity of 272 kg and carry bag.
Why this product fits the profile: This single bed measuring 99 × 191 × 30 cm is ideal for festivals, camping or occasional guests. The USB pump can be powered by a suitable 5 V power source.
The power supply is not limited to a mains socket. However, before use you should check whether a power bank, laptop or USB mains adapter provides the right connection.
Built-in USB pump, 30 cm height, 136 kg maximum weight capacity and 2-in-1 valve.
Why this product fits the profile: This foldable sofa bed works as a seat, lounger or single bed. At 90 × 53 × 57 cm when folded and weighing 9 kg, it's suitable for smaller rooms.
It requires no inflation and can still be used as a seat. This removes the need to find a power source, if an air mattress isn't what you need.
Six-level adjustable backrest, metal frame, two lumbar cushions and removable, washable cover.
We've put together a full, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations in force in the EU.
Before setting up, make sure the ground is free of stones, sharp edges, animal claws and other sharp objects. An air mattress should not be placed in water and is not a toy. Children should only use it under supervision; jumping and rough play can damage the seams and internal structure.
Only inflate the product to the intended firmness. Excessive pressure can strain the seams. After use, allow the surface to dry completely before folding and storing the mattress. Direct sunlight, moisture and high temperatures can damage the material over time.
It depends on the size and type of pump. The Comfort Plus double model is stated to take around three minutes. The USB single model takes about four minutes according to the product description. With a hand pump, the ground, pump size and desired firmness can all affect the time.
It's not possible to give a fixed lifespan. It depends on the material, usage, storage and ground conditions. Check the bed for cracks and leaks before each use. Storing it in a dry, dark place and avoiding overloading can help extend its life.
A slight loss of pressure can occur due to material stretch, temperature changes or a valve that isn't fully closed. So check the valve and top up carefully if needed. A significant or repeated loss of pressure, however, may indicate a leak.
