Buying an air mattress: choose the right size, pump and model for your needs

An air mattress can serve as a guest bed, camping mat or space-saving sleeping solution. However, when buying one, it is not just a soft surface or quick inflation that matters. The key factors are its dimensions, weight capacity, pump system and intended place of use.

Common air mattress buying mistakes

1. “With pump” does not always mean independent of mains power

An integrated electric pump is convenient, but requires a 220- to 240-volt socket. For camping, festivals or travel without access to mains electricity, this system is only suitable to a limited extent. A USB pump, on the other hand, requires a compatible 5-volt power source, such as a power bank. Models with an integrated foot pump work without electricity, but require physical effort.

So do not just look for the description “air mattress with integrated pump”; check the exact type of pump.

2. The sleeping surface is confused with the overall height

A tall air mattress is generally more comfortable to get on and off. However, height alone says nothing about the usable sleeping surface. A model measuring 191 × 99 cm is suitable for one person, while an air mattress for 2 people needs considerably more width. Also check whether the dimensions refer to the inflated or packed size.

3. Load capacity and actual use are underestimated

An air mattress is not a permanent replacement bed for every situation. Its maximum load capacity must match the number of people and their body weight. Jumping, standing, pets, sharp objects and direct heat can also damage seams or PVC surfaces. A repair patch is useful, but it cannot replace a suitable base and careful handling.

The most important selection criteria

Size: single, double or camping air mattress

For one person, an air mattress for 1 person measuring around 191 cm long and 73 to 99 cm wide is standard. Compact cot-size models save space and weight. For couples, formats such as 191 × 137 cm or 203 × 152 cm are suitable. An air mattress for 2 people should not only be wide enough, but also offer an appropriate maximum load capacity.

An inflatable guest bed can be larger and taller if it will mainly be used at home. For tents, festivals or backpacking trips, however, weight, packed size and a low profile are more important.

Height and construction

A raised airbed measuring around 30 to 46 cm makes it easier to get up and can feel more like a bed in a guest room. Lower models between approximately 22 and 30 cm are often easier to transport and fit better inside smaller tents.

Pay attention to the stated internal construction. Fiber-Tech fibres, Wave-Beam elements and Coil-Beams describe different support structures. These details do not replace a traditional mattress assessment, but they do provide indications of shape retention and how the sleeping surface is supported.

Material, valve and care

PVC is the basic material used in many airbeds. A flocked surface can feel more comfortable and helps prevent bed linen from slipping easily. For outdoor use, a durable underside, a reliable valve and a compact packed size are important.

The inflatable mattress should be completely dry before it is folded away. Clean it with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Harsh cleaners, direct sunlight and storage in damp conditions can damage the material.

Practical advice on setting up and storing your mattress

  • Place the mattress on a flat, clean surface free from stones, twigs and sharp edges.
  • Inflate it only to the recommended firmness. Excess pressure can strain the seams and valves.
  • With electric pumps, cables, the pump and plug connection must be protected from moisture.
  • Allow the mattress to dry completely before storing it.
  • Before each use, check the valves, seams and surface for visible damage.
  • A foldable air mattress should not be left tightly bent or stored under a heavy load for extended periods.

For outdoor use only, an inflatable sleeping mat or foam mat may also be a sensible choice. A foldable XPE foam mat is less dependent on valves and pumps, but offers a different sleeping height and level of cushioning from an airbed.

Frequently asked questions about air mattresses

How long does an air mattress take to inflate?

This depends on the type of pump, its volume and the model. The product descriptions mentioned above state an inflation time of around three to four minutes for integrated electric pumps. Depending on the size and the effort required, a foot pump takes longer.

Why does an airbed lose firmness overnight?

PVC and the internal construction can adjust slightly as a result of temperature changes and pressure. Some models recommend topping up the air after the first use. If the mattress deflates noticeably, first check the valve, seams and any possible small areas of damage.

How much does it cost to run an air mattress with an electric pump?

Running costs depend on the pump’s power consumption and short operating time. As inflation usually takes only a few minutes, the electricity used per cycle is limited. For camping without access to mains power, a foot pump, hand pump or battery-operated model is the more suitable choice.
