Buying an air mattress: sizes, pumps and models for guests, camping and travel

An air mattress is quick to store and ready to use whenever you need it. However, choosing the right one can be disappointing when important details are missing or marketing claims are misinterpreted. The key factors are dimensions, maximum weight capacity, pump type and intended use.

Common pitfalls when buying an air mattress

1. The stated size does not fit the room

A double model measuring 152 × 203 cm requires considerably more floor space than a single air mattress measuring 99 × 191 cm. You should also leave some room around the air bed for getting in and out. Before buying, measure the available space and take doors, cupboards and radiators into account.

2. A pump is not automatically included

With an air bed with an integrated pump, powering it is usually straightforward, provided a socket is available. Other models only have a 2-in-1 valve and require a separate hand, foot or electric pump. For camping, festivals or overnight stays in a vehicle, a USB pump or manual pump may be more practical than a 220 to 240-volt connection.

3. Comfort claims are no substitute for technical specifications

A soft surface alone says little about stability. The height, internal construction, material specifications and maximum weight capacity are all important. An inflatable guest bed can also lose air or become damaged if used incorrectly: sharp objects, overloading and excessive inflation are among the most common causes.

Criteria you should check

Size and sleeping position

For one person, dimensions of around 191 × 99 cm are often sufficient indoors. A narrower model measuring 191 × 76 cm saves space and weight, but offers less room to move. A double air mattress starts at around 137 cm wide among the models presented here; Queen-size versions measuring 152 cm wide offer more space for two people.

Height affects how easy the mattress is to get on and off, as well as how much room it takes to store. Models that are 25 cm high remain relatively compact. An air bed measuring 30 to 42 cm in height makes getting up easier, but requires more storage space and may be more difficult to transport.

Weight capacity and construction

Compare the manufacturer's stated maximum weight capacity with the combined body weight of everyone using it. The single models available, for example, support up to 136 kg, while the double models support up to 272 kg. These limits must not be exceeded.

Constructions featuring Fiber-Tech or Fibertech fibres use an internal fibre structure. In the Intex models mentioned, this is combined with a wave-shaped sleeping surface. A flocked top can help prevent bedding from slipping and feels less smooth against bare skin. PVC sides and undersides can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

Pump type and power supply

An electric air mattress with an integrated 220 to 240-volt pump is particularly suitable for guest rooms or homes with an accessible socket. A USB pump operates with a suitable 5-volt power source, such as a power bank or USB mains adapter. Check the required output, for example at least 2 A for certain USB pumps.

For a camping air mattress without an integrated pump, you will need to plan for a separate pump. This does mean carrying additional accessories, but allows flexible use away from a socket. A foldable camping mat made from XPE foam is another option when low weight and simple setup are more important than a high sleeping height. An insulated camping mat can also be used as an additional layer beneath an air bed.

Setup, care and storage

Place the air mattress on a level, clean surface. When using it in a tent, remove stones, twigs and other sharp objects. Only inflate the model to the recommended firmness. Excessive tension can put strain on seams and valves.

After use, clean the surface with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Deflate the air bed as fully as possible before rolling or folding it. Store it in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight and away from heat or naked flames. For a model with an electric pump, disconnect the power supply after inflation.

Frequently asked questions about air mattresses

How long does an air mattress last?

Its lifespan depends on the material, use, load and storage conditions. Check the surface and valves before every use. Small areas of damage may be repairable if a suitable repair patch is provided.

Which air mattress is suitable for guests?

For one person, a single air mattress measuring around 191 × 99 cm is usually sufficient. Models from 137 cm wide are available for couples. A height of 30 to 42 cm can make getting on and off easier, while 25 cm models often require less storage space.

How much does it cost to run an electric air mattress?

Running costs depend on the pump's power and the short inflation time. USB models require a compatible power source, while 220 to 240-volt pumps require a socket. Before buying, check not only the pump but also the connection it is designed to use.
