Buying an air mattress: how to compare sizes, pumps and comfort

An air mattress can be a practical choice as a guest bed, a camping bed or a space-saving temporary solution. However, air beds, inflatable mattresses and camping air mattresses can differ considerably in how they’re set up, how stable they are and how easy they are to transport. If you focus only on a low price or an especially large sleeping area, you could overlook important details.

Common pitfalls when buying an air mattress

1. Confusing the sleeping area with the overall height

A double air mattress measuring 152 × 203 cm can generally accommodate two people. However, its usable sleeping area may feel different from that of a conventional mattress because of its construction, rounded sides or integrated pillow section. The height also affects how easy it is to get in and out:

  • Around 25 to 30 cm high: more compact, usually easier to transport and suitable for camping or occasional guests.
  • Around 42 to 46 cm high: makes it easier to sit down and get up, but takes up more storage space.
  • Single air mattress: often around 76 to 99 cm wide and designed for one person.
  • Air bed for two people: usually around 152 cm wide; check the maximum total load.

2. ‘With a pump’ doesn’t always mean ‘ready to use anywhere’

An air mattress with a pump may come with a hand pump, foot pump, built-in electric pump or USB pump. These options aren’t interchangeable:

  • A hand pump doesn’t need electricity and is suitable for occasional use, but takes longer.
  • An electric air mattress with a 220–240-volt pump is mainly intended for indoor use or campsites with an electricity supply.
  • An air mattress with a built-in USB pump can be powered by a compatible power bank, laptop or USB mains adaptor. However, the power source isn’t automatically included.
  • Camping models with a foot pump don’t require an extra device, but take more physical effort to use.

Before buying, check the connection type, cable length, whether the pump can also deflate the mattress and the estimated inflation time.

3. Comfort claims don’t replace checking the materials

A soft flocked surface can make an air mattress more comfortable to lie on, but it doesn’t tell you how stable the mattress is. The construction and weight limit are also important. The models listed here use materials including PVC or vinyl, polyester fibres and TPU-coated polyester.

A memory foam mattress isn’t automatically an air mattress, either. According to the product information, the MLILY models have a three-layer foam construction with AirCell viscose memory foam and Cool-Flex gel foam. They need a suitable base and, at 18 cm high and weighing 13 or 21 kg, are better suited to staying in one place.

Before buying, check:

  1. Maximum weight capacity: for example, 136 kg for certain single models or 272 kg for selected double models.
  2. Valve and deflation: a 2-in-1 valve or a pump with a deflation function makes packing away easier.
  3. Packed size and weight: for backpacking, 1.6 kg or less is much more practical than a tall air bed.
  4. Surface: stones, branches, sharp edges and pets’ claws can damage PVC, vinyl or TPU.
  5. Topping up the air: new air beds can settle a little after the first few uses. According to the product information, you may need to inflate them again.

Setting up, caring for and using your air mattress safely

Place the air mattress on a flat, clean surface. When camping, use a protective groundsheet or a suitable tent footprint. Inflate the air bed only until it reaches the recommended firmness. Over-inflation can put strain on the seams and valves.

After use, clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Don’t fold the product away until all moisture has gone. Store it somewhere dry, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and open flames. Children shouldn’t jump on the air bed; pets’ claws can damage the surface.

Frequently asked questions about air mattresses

How long does an air mattress last?

Its lifespan depends on the material, weight load, surface, storage and frequency of use, so it isn’t possible to give a single time estimate. Check the valves, seams and surface before each use. Depending on what’s included, you may be able to repair minor damage with a repair patch.

How do you inflate an air mattress properly?

Use the hand, foot, electric or USB pump that’s suitable for the product. Then close the valve completely and check that the surface is evenly taut. If you’re using an electric pump, the power supply must match the stated voltage. An air mattress with a USB pump needs a compatible 5-volt power source.

Is an air mattress suitable for every night?

An air bed is generally designed as a temporary sleeping solution. For daily, long-term use, its height, ventilation, base and how comfortable it feels to you can all make a difference. If you’re looking for a permanent option, you may also want to compare foam or memory foam mattresses with a suitable base.
