Buying an air bed: which size, pump and features suit your needs?

An air bed is quick to pack away and can provide a flexible sleeping option for guests, when travelling or while camping. However, a low price alone does not automatically mean you have made the right choice. Important details such as weight capacity, pump type and actual sleeping area are often only considered at a later stage.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter the relevant product data and explain what households in Germany should look out for when buying an inflatable bed.

Typical pitfalls when buying an air bed

1. Overall dimensions and sleeping area are confused

A double air bed measuring 152 × 203 cm requires considerably more floor space than a single air bed measuring 99 × 191 cm. You should also allow some room around the bed for getting in and out. A narrower model may be more practical in a small guest room, while the tent’s internal dimensions are the deciding factor when camping.

Also check whether the stated height refers to the actual sleeping height or the total height including the base. An inflatable guest bed measuring 42 cm high provides a higher entry point than a 17 cm camping model, but requires more storage space.

2. An integrated pump is not always the same

An air bed with an integrated pump can make set-up easier, but it requires either a mains socket or a suitable USB power source. Electric 220–240 V pumps are practical at home. USB pumps, on the other hand, can be operated with a power bank or USB mains adapter, provided the required output is available.

With a model featuring a separate or integrated hand pump, you are not dependent on electricity. This is useful when camping, although setting up the bed may require more physical effort. Before buying, therefore, check whether a pump is actually included in the package.

3. Marketing terms do not replace technical specifications

Terms such as “comfortable”, “stable” or “luxurious” are not very meaningful without measurable details. More important are:

  • Sleeping area and height in centimetres
  • Maximum weight capacity for one or two people
  • Material, such as PVC vinyl and polyester fibres
  • Surface, for example a flocked, non-slip top layer
  • Valve type and expected inflation time
  • Contents, such as a carry bag, repair patches or pump

With a Fiber-Tech air bed, the internal construction is described as using polyester fibres. According to the product information for the respective models, this construction is intended to support shape retention. This is a technical product feature, but it is not a guarantee of a specific service life.

Parameters to check before buying

Size and weight capacity

Widths of around 76 to 99 cm are usual for one person. Models measuring 99 × 191 cm offer more freedom of movement than compact camping mattresses measuring 67 × 184 cm. For two people, options with widths of 137, 152 or 183 cm are available, for example.

The weight capacity should accommodate not only body weight but also additional loads. In the product information available, the capacities range from 136 kg for single models to 272 kg for double models. The bed should not be loaded beyond the manufacturer’s stated limit. Jumping, kneeling or concentrated pressure can place additional strain on the construction.

Height and ease of access

A height of 25 cm is a compromise between pack size and entry height. Mid-rise models measuring 30 to 33 cm provide a higher edge. Options with a total height of 42 cm may appeal to people who would rather not sleep so close to the floor. For backpacking trips or festivals, low weight and a compact pack size are usually more important than a higher entry point.

Pump and power supply

An inflatable electric guest bed with an integrated 220–240 V pump is particularly suitable for indoor use where a mains socket is available. A USB pump is more flexible for travelling, but requires a compatible power supply. A model with a foot pump or separate valve can be used without electricity.

Before using the air bed for the first time, place it on a flat, clean surface. Stones, twigs, animal claws and sharp edges can damage PVC. The material should also not be used near naked flames or strong heat sources.

Care, set-up and storage

To keep an inflatable bed usable for as long as possible, follow these points:

  1. Check the surface for stones, screws, animal hair and other sharp objects before setting up the bed.
  2. Inflate the air bed only to the intended firmness and do not overfill it.
  3. Clean the surface with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  4. Allow it to dry completely before folding it up.
  5. Store it in a dry, cool place protected from direct sunlight.
  6. Check the valve, seams and surface for visible damage before each use.

The material may stretch slightly during the first use. If the sleeping surface feels softer after a few hours, air can be carefully added in accordance with the product information. However, an air bed is not a permanent replacement for a regular bed if the manufacturer specifies that it is intended only for temporary use.

Frequently asked questions about air beds

How long does an air bed take to inflate?

This depends on its size and pump type. The stated times for the selected models range from approximately two to seven minutes. With USB pumps, the output of the power source is also important. The valve should be closed fully after inflation.

How long does an air bed last?

It is not possible to give a general service life. This depends, among other things, on the material, frequency of use, storage conditions, surface and load. Sharp objects, overfilling, heat and incorrect folding can put strain on the PVC and seams. Storing the bed in a dry, protected place and observing the maximum weight capacity can help prevent typical damage.

Does an air bed with a pump use a lot of electricity?

The pump normally runs only while the bed is being inflated or deflated. Actual consumption depends on the pump’s power and operating time. If you do not want to use a mains socket, you can choose a model with a foot pump or a USB version with a suitable power bank. Check the power supply specifications and do not use damaged cables or pumps.
