Buying an air mattress: which type is right for camping, guests and everyday sleeping?

An air mattress can serve as a space-saving guest bed, camping mat or short-term sleeping solution. However, not every model is suitable for every purpose. A thin camping air mattress is easy to transport, but has a different construction from a tall air bed for guests. Terms such as “ergonomic”, “self-inflating” and “with integrated pump” should also be assessed against specific product data.

Common buying pitfalls when choosing an air mattress

1. Dimensions are considered without the intended use in mind

A stated length of 190 or 200 cm tells you little about actual sleeping comfort on its own. Width, height and usable sleeping surface are also important. For one person, a single air mattress around 67 to 80 cm wide may be sufficient. If you move around frequently in your sleep or are looking for a guest mattress for adults, you should choose a wider model.

With a double air mattress, the internal dimensions of the tent, room size and permitted load must also be compatible. The maximum weight capacity does not automatically mean that two adults can use it comfortably.

2. A pump is not always included

An inflatable mattress with a standard valve will often require a separate hand, foot or electric pump. For example, the INTEX camping mattress explicitly does not include a pump. An air bed with an integrated pump, on the other hand, is ready to use more quickly but requires a suitable power source.

Integrated electric pumps are therefore not always practical for festivals, hiking trips and remote campsites. A foot pump or self-inflating design may be more suitable in these situations. Before buying, shoppers should check:

  • Is a pump included?
  • What type of valve is used?
  • Is a power socket required?
  • How can the air be released?
  • Is a repair kit or are suitable patches included?

3. A soft surface does not automatically mean high durability

PVC is common in many air mattresses and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. However, sharp stones, thorns, glass and pets’ claws can damage the material. Depending on the design, a coated nylon or TPU surface can be water-repellent and lightweight for camping mats, but it does not replace a carefully prepared surface.

A high mattress is not automatically suitable for everyday sleeping either. Many camping models are designed for occasional use. For long-term use, the product description should explicitly state that it offers a suitable support structure, sufficient stability and appropriate care instructions.

The most important selection criteria at a glance

Size, height and weight capacity

Compare the dimensions when inflated with the space available. The packed size is also important for transport. A self-inflating sleeping mat or folding foam mat can often be stored more quickly than a large air bed.

Height affects the distance from cold or uneven ground. For camping, however, height is not the only relevant factor: insulation matters too. The R-value describes the thermal resistance of sleeping mats. A higher value generally indicates stronger insulation, but it should always be considered in relation to the temperature, sleeping bag and ground conditions.

Material, valve and repair options

Look for specific material details such as PVC, polyester, TPU or XPE foam. With a camping mat, double coatings, welded seams and robust valves are important details. A repair kit can be useful for minor damage, but it does not replace a thorough inspection of the seams.

An XPE foam sleeping mat does not need to be inflated, making it less vulnerable to small leaks. However, it requires more storage space and usually provides different cushioning from an air mattress.

Firmness and construction

For guests, a straightforward, sufficiently high air mattress is usually a sensible choice. If you are looking for a mattress for regular use, you should pay attention to its construction. A memory foam mattress or an ergonomic 7-zone mattress is not a traditional camping air mattress, but may be an interesting option for a permanent bed setup.

According to the product details, the MLILY models combine three layers of comfort foam, AirCell visco memory foam and Cool-Flex gel foam. The models feature seven comfort zones and a cover made from recycled Seaqual material. The stated OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR certifications should be checked on the product page and in the associated documents. They do not indicate any medical effect.

Care and safe use

  • Clear the surface of stones, thorns and other sharp objects before inflating.
  • Do not inflate an air mattress beyond the stated pressure.
  • Close the valves fully after inflating and check the valve areas first if air is lost.
  • Clean the surface with a damp cloth and mild cleaning product.
  • Allow the mattress to dry completely before storing it.
  • Do not use near naked flames or strong sources of heat.
  • Do not use air mattresses as swimming aids or water toys.

Air mattress FAQ

How long does an air mattress hold air?

This depends on the material, temperature, load, valve and surface. PVC can expand differently when temperatures fluctuate. A slight loss of pressure is therefore not always a leak. In the event of significant air loss, the valve, seams and surface should be checked using a suitable testing method.

Which air mattress is suitable for camping?

For camping, low weight, a compact packed size, sufficient insulation and a reliable valve are all important. Backpackers often choose a lightweight sleeping mat with an integrated pump. For car camping, a higher camping air mattress with a larger sleeping surface may be more practical. An electric pump is only useful if mains electricity or a portable power source is available.

What is the difference between an air mattress and a self-inflating sleeping mat?

An air mattress is mainly filled with air and can provide a high sleeping surface, depending on the model. A self-inflating sleeping mat usually combines foam and air, requiring less manual inflation. A pure foam sleeping mat is less susceptible to leaks, but is often less compact when packed. The right choice therefore depends on transport, insulation, sleeping comfort and where you intend to use it.
