Buying an air mattress: how to compare sizes, pumps and materials

An air mattress can serve as a space-saving guest bed, a sleeping mat in a tent or extra sleeping space at home. However, the differences between models are not limited to price. The pump type, dimensions, load capacity and surface material determine whether an inflatable mattress is suitable for its intended use.

Common air mattress buying mistakes

1. An integrated pump is not always practical everywhere

An air mattress with a pump can usually be set up quickly at home. However, an electric AC pump requires a mains socket. For camping, festivals or travelling, a USB model with a power bank connection may offer greater flexibility. A manual pump takes longer to inflate, but does not require a power source.

Also check whether the pump is actually included. Some models only have a valve and require a separate hand or foot pump.

2. The sleeping height alone says little about comfort

A tall air bed makes getting in and out easier. However, this does not automatically mean that the sleeping surface is sufficiently stable. The internal construction, maximum load and ability to adjust the firmness are also important.

A raised construction can be useful as a guest bed at home. In a tent, however, the packed size and weight are often more important than the maximum height.

3. Size specifications are easily misjudged

A single air mattress is not always suitable for every body height or sleeping position. A single air bed that is 76 cm wide takes up significantly less space than a 99 cm model. For two people, options include an air bed for two people, a Full size or a double air mattress.

Measure the available floor space before buying. In a tent, you must also take the inner walls, sleeping direction and access into account.

The most important technical criteria

Dimensions and capacity

Check the measurements in centimetres rather than relying solely on the terms ‘Twin’, ‘Full’ or ‘Queen’. Important factors include:

  • Length: Taller people need a sleeping surface that is long enough.
  • Width: A single air mattress is designed for one person; wider models can provide more freedom of movement.
  • Height: 22 to 25 cm is often suitable for mobile use. Around 30 cm or more makes getting in and out easier.
  • Load capacity: The stated maximum load must not be exceeded. For two people, this means their combined body weight, including any additional load.

Material and surface

The models featured are mainly made from PVC or vinyl, in some cases supplemented with polyester fibres. A flocked surface can feel more comfortable and helps prevent bedding from slipping easily. However, it is not a substitute for a protective layer against sharp objects.

For camping, the ground should be free from stones, twigs, glass and thorns. Indoors, a carpet or thin blanket can protect both the floor and the mattress. After cleaning, the air mattress must be completely dry before it is packed away.

Pump and valve system

A self-inflating air mattress does not necessarily inflate without any waiting time: depending on its construction, it may first need to be unrolled and supplied with air through a valve. The products selected here are either models with an integrated electric or USB pump, or variants that require a separate pump.

Look out for:

  • AC pump: Suitable for 220–240 V sockets, particularly in flats and guest rooms.
  • USB pump: Can be operated using a compatible 5-volt power source such as a power bank.
  • 2-in-1 valve: Depending on the design, supports quick inflation and deflation.
  • Manual pump: Independent of mains power, but takes longer to use.

Frequently asked questions about air mattresses

How long does it take to inflate an air mattress?

This depends on the pump system and size. According to the product details, the integrated models mentioned take approximately three to four minutes. Depending on the volume and desired firmness, a hand pump may take longer.

How long does an air mattress last?

There is no standard service life that applies in every case. The material, frequency of use, ground surface, storage conditions and load all affect how long it lasts. Regular visual checks and dry, protected storage help you identify damage at an early stage.

Does an air bed lose air overnight?

PVC can feel softer as a result of temperature changes and material stretching. After the first use, it may be necessary to top it up carefully. If the air loss is significant or keeps recurring, check the valves, seams and surface for damage.
