Buying artificial flowers and plants: a guide to choosing options for indoors, balconies and gardens

Artificial flowers and plants are a practical way to decorate living spaces, balconies, patios and event venues without watering or regularly replacing them. The choice ranges from individual silk flowers and artificial bouquets to garlands and hanging plants. However, product photos can make items look more alike than they really are in terms of material, size and intended use.

If you’re looking to buy artificial floral decorations, don’t focus only on colour and price. These three common pitfalls are particularly likely to lead to disappointing purchases:

  • Unclear suitability for outdoor use: “For indoor and outdoor use” doesn’t automatically mean a product can be left out in rain, frost and strong winds all year round.
  • Smaller than expected: A single garland may look generous in product photos, but can seem narrow on a balcony railing or large wall.
  • Rigid or delicate stems: Without built-in wire, many flowers can only be arranged in a limited number of ways. Flowers or leaves may also be bent during delivery or storage.

What to check before you order

1. Material and stated weather resistance

Polyester, fabric, plastic and silk-effect materials are all suitable for indoor use. With silk flowers, the fabric flower heads are usually the main feature, while the stems are made of plastic or plastic-coated wire. This makes them easy to shape, but doesn’t in itself indicate whether they’re suitable for outdoor use.

For artificial flowers for outdoor use, specific claims such as “UV-resistant”, “water-repellent” or “suitable for outdoor use” are more helpful than general terms such as “durable”. Even then, consider where you plan to place them:

  • Covered balconies and entranceways are less exposed than open garden spaces.
  • Prolonged damp, frost and strong winds can put strain on materials and joins.
  • Products described as UV-resistant may be better suited to sunny spots, but this doesn’t guarantee that their colour will remain unchanged indefinitely.

2. Length, quantity and fullness

Measure the space where you plan to display your flowers before buying. For example, a 75 cm garland may suit a small planter, while 1.8 m or 2.4 m options may be more practical for railings, arches and larger backdrops. Also check whether the stated length applies to each item or to the whole set.

For artificial bouquets, the number of stems matters. Several slim branches are often easier to arrange together than one compact, pre-tied bouquet. For a wedding or photo backdrop, also work out how many sets you’ll need to achieve the look you want.

3. Fixings and care

Built-in iron or metal wire makes it easier to bend and position flowers. Hanging loops, found on some floral garlands, make them easier to attach to railings, walls or arches. Even so, make sure they’re securely fastened, especially in windy conditions.

Artificial floral decorations are easy to care for and usually only need occasional dusting or a gentle wipe. Some materials shouldn’t be cleaned with water. If there’s an initial plastic smell, airing the product in a well-ventilated room may help. Keep small parts and wire ends away from young children, and keep artificial materials away from naked flames.

For artificial wedding flowers, table decorations or DIY bouquets, individual roses, gerberas and hydrangeas may be a better choice than garlands. One example is Wei’s Moment’s 20-piece set of cream-white roses: browse artificial roses for DIY arrangements. Before ordering a set like this, check whether it includes a vase, ribbons and any other accessories.

Frequently asked questions about artificial flowers and plants

How do you attach artificial trailing plants to a balcony?

Use the hanging loops provided, or secure the garland with cable ties, plant clips or decorative wire. Make sure the fixings can support the weight of the garland and any movement caused by the wind. If you rent your home, you’ll need permission before drilling holes.

How long do artificial flowers last?

How long they last depends on the material, where they’re placed and how they’re cared for. Indoor spaces without direct sunlight tend to be less demanding on colours and plastics than exposed outdoor areas. UV-resistant artificial flowers may be better suited to sunny spots, but you should still check them regularly for fading, brittle stems and loose joins.

Are artificial flowers easier to care for than real plants?

You generally won’t need to water, feed or prune them. However, artificial flowers and plants still need the occasional dust. Check the care instructions for each product, as not all fabrics are waterproof and some garlands should only be cleaned without water.
