Artificial plants for decoration are ideal for homes, offices, shops and rooms with little natural light. They don’t need regular watering or a carefully chosen position to grow. However, not every artificial plant in a pot is automatically a good choice. The material, stability, proportions and finish all affect how well it works as a long-lasting decoration.
Product photos can make it difficult to judge an item’s actual size. A small artificial succulent can look lost on a large dining table, while a 90 cm artificial tree might overwhelm a narrow shelf. Before you buy, compare the overall height, pot diameter and available space.
Room height matters too. An artificial monstera or ficus needs enough clearance from the ceiling, furniture and walkways. Compact arrangements are usually more practical for windowsills and desks.
Highly glossy plastic, single-colour leaves or unnaturally regular arrangements can make a decoration look less convincing. Look for visible leaf textures, varied shades of green and natural-looking branches.
Some products need their stems and leaves adjusting after unpacking. This isn’t a fault, but it’s worth bearing in mind when you choose. For larger artificial plants, a pot filled with pebbles can also help create a more realistic look.
“Maintenance-free” doesn’t mean artificial plants need no care at all. Dust can settle on leaves and moss. An occasional clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is usually enough. It’s also important to check whether the product comes pre-assembled, ready to slot together or needs assembling from scratch.
For an artificial hanging plant, check the wall type, fixing materials and position of the hanging point. If you’re renting, a freestanding alternative may be a better choice.
Artificial plants are often made from plastic, while their pots may be made from cement, concrete or other decorative materials. Plastic leaves are lightweight and easy to clean. A heavy pot can improve stability, but is less convenient if you want to move it around.
Geometric pots, concrete finishes and subtle colours suit a modern, pared-back interior. Eucalyptus, succulents and grasses work well with neutral home décor. If you prefer larger leaves, you could choose an artificial monstera or ficus.
It’s a good idea to take a few quick measurements before you shop:
Artificial plants for the office or home shouldn’t be placed in doorways, escape routes or areas where they’re likely to be knocked. If you plan to use one outdoors, check that it’s specifically designed for outdoor use. A plant labelled for indoor use shouldn’t be left out in the rain or exposed to the elements for long periods.
Some decorative artificial plants arrive fully arranged. Other models need their branches bending into shape or individual leaves adjusting. Keep the product description so you can refer back to the assembly instructions and material details.
A soft brush, microfibre cloth or gentle dusting can be used for cleaning. Harsh cleaning products may damage plastic surfaces, colours or coatings.

Small models can be placed directly on a flat surface. For larger artificial plants in pots, check that the surface is level. Hanging plants need suitable wall or ceiling fixings. Make sure the screws and wall plugs are right for the surface.
Lifespan depends on the material, finish, location and cleaning. Indoors, plastic leaves generally stay looking good for longer with normal use than they would in constant sunlight, damp conditions or areas where they’re handled frequently. Direct exposure to UV light can alter colours over time.
Unlike real plants, they don’t need water, fertiliser or potting compost. They still need a little care, though: dust them occasionally and check the fixings on mounted products. This will help keep your easy-care plant décor looking tidy and securely in place.
