A bar stool can be a practical and space-saving addition to a kitchen island, breakfast bar or home bar. However, not every model suits every worktop. Mistakes often happen not because of the design, but due to unclear measurements, overestimated weight capacity or unsuitable materials.
Many product descriptions list the overall height of the bar stool first. For seating comfort, however, it is the seat height from the floor to the seat surface that matters. A model with an overall height of 90 cm could, for example, have a seat height of 68 cm.
As a practical guide:
Before buying, measure the clearance under the worktop. Armrests or a wide backrest will also need enough room.
A stated maximum weight capacity usually refers to a static load that is evenly distributed. Sudden movements, rocking or standing on the stool can put greater strain on the construction. For commercial use, events or a busy household, a sturdy frame, secure joints and an appropriate weight capacity rating are especially important.
Velvet, metal, wood and bamboo differ significantly in terms of care, warmth and where they are best used. A velvet bar stool can feel cosy and inviting, but requires careful cleaning. A metal bar stool is usually easy to wipe down, but without suitable floor protectors it can scratch delicate flooring. With a bamboo stool, be sure to check the care instructions and the permitted weight load.
Note down three measurements before you start choosing:
For multiple stools, the distance between the centre of each seat is also important. Models placed too close together make it difficult to sit down and get up. With a bar stool set, check the external dimensions of each individual stool as well as the number of seats included.
A bar stool with a backrest can provide extra support during longer meals. However, a backrest also changes the amount of floor space needed. A continuous or integrated footrest relieves your legs and should be firmly attached to the frame.
A swivel bar stool makes it easier to sit down and stand up. With height-adjustable models, also check whether the mechanism is suitable for the intended use and whether the height can be securely locked. A 360-degree swivel is a functional feature, but on its own it says nothing about the overall stability of the stool.
Look for specific material details rather than vague terms like “high-quality” or “robust”. Things to consider include:
For commercial use, you should also consider local requirements for escape routes, stability and furniture in publicly accessible areas. Any specific standard or safety information should always be clearly traceable in the product details.

That depends on the height of the kitchen island. For a worktop around 90 cm high, a seat height between 60 and 68 cm may work. Measure the distance to the underside of the worktop and allow roughly 25 to 30 cm of legroom. For a taller counter, you will need correspondingly higher counter stools.
A backrest can provide extra support when sitting, especially during longer meals or conversations. However, it usually makes the stool larger and may prevent it from being pushed fully under the worktop. So check the seat height, backrest height and the available floor space together.
It is not possible to give a reliable lifespan without details of use, care and load. For longer-lasting use, check screw connections regularly, replace floor glides when needed and follow the relevant care instructions. Also avoid using the stool as a step ladder and do not exceed the stated weight capacity.
