Lighting without a socket is suitable for many situations: on the balcony, in the bedroom, while camping or as seasonal decoration. Battery-powered LED lamps and string lights can, however, differ considerably in terms of power supply, IP rating, brightness and operation. If you focus only on design or a high number of LEDs, it is easy to overlook important details.
A string light with 50 LEDs is not automatically brighter than a version with 20 LEDs. Important factors include luminous flux in lumens, the distance between LEDs, beam angle and the intended use. Low light levels are usually sufficient for decorative mood lighting. A rechargeable lamp or LED table lamp for reading, on the other hand, should have clear information about its luminous flux.
The IP44 rating means protection against solid foreign objects larger than 1 mm, as well as splashing water from various directions. A product with IP44 should not be left in the rain permanently or immersed in water.
IP54 additionally provides limited protection against dust and splashing water. Even outdoor garden lighting with this rating should be stored in a protected place during heavy rain, frost or extended periods of non-use. An IP20 string light, on the other hand, is intended for dry indoor areas.
With a classic battery-powered LED string light, batteries are not always included. Some models require two, three or four AA batteries. For rechargeable lamps, the battery type, charging cable and charging time are relevant. Runtime can only be assessed reliably when the supplier provides dependable information. Also check whether the product has a timer, memory function or automatic switch-off.
Battery-powered products can be placed independently of power sockets. AA batteries are widely available and suitable for occasional use, for example at a party or as decorative Christmas lighting. An integrated rechargeable battery reduces the need for disposable batteries and can be more practical for frequent use. However, the lamp must be charged regularly via USB.

A dimmable LED lamp offers several brightness levels and can be adjusted more effectively to the time of day and intended use. With a table lamp, 200 lm may be sufficient for a dining table, bedside table or balcony. For targeted reading light, you should also consider the base, light distribution and position.
Measure the available space before buying. A 125 cm-high cordless lamp requires sufficient floor space and should stand on a stable, level surface. Compact models are more suitable for shelves, windowsills or bedside tables. With a string light, the total length, distance between LEDs and connecting cable are important. These details determine whether the product will reach all the way across a mirror, railing or table edge.

Remove conventional batteries if a string light will not be used for an extended period. This helps reduce the risk of leakage. Rechargeable lamps should be fully charged before first use and stored in a dry place away from extreme temperatures if they will not be used for a longer period.

Running costs depend on the battery type, lighting duration, brightness level and LED output. A low wattage alone does not indicate how long a lamp will run on one set of batteries. For frequent use, a rechargeable lamp may be more practical; for occasional decoration, standard batteries remain a flexible option.
First, insert the correct batteries as instructed and close the battery compartment completely. You can then attach the string light in a dry, stable location. With outdoor models, the IP rating and installation location must be suitable for each other. The battery compartment should not be placed on the ground or exposed to direct rain.
There is no single answer for overall operating time. It depends on LED output, brightness level, rechargeable battery capacity or battery capacity, and daily usage. LEDs themselves are generally designed for a long service life; with rechargeable models, usable battery capacity may decrease over repeated charging cycles.
