Battery-powered LED string lights can be installed wherever there is no socket: on the Christmas tree, balcony, in the garden, living room or when camping. Before buying, however, it is worth taking a close look at the technical specifications. Terms such as “waterproof”, “bright” or “for indoor and outdoor use” do not always adequately describe the actual areas of use.
For LED string lights for indoor and outdoor use, the IP rating is crucial. A light with IP44 is protected against solid foreign objects measuring 1 mm or more, as well as splashing water from various directions. However, it is not suitable for immersion. The battery compartment must also remain closed and protected from direct moisture.
By contrast, string lights with IP20 are intended exclusively for dry indoor areas. This applies, for example, to the Atmosphera garland with 16 LEDs. It should not be used on an unprotected balcony or in the garden.
The stated overall length may include a connection cable. For decorating, the most important measurement is the distance between the battery compartment and the final LED. The spacing between the lights also affects the overall appearance:
The area to be decorated should be measured before placing your order. A 4 m string is enough for a small balcony area, while lengths of 14.7 to 15.3 m are intended for larger spaces.
A string of lights with 8 lighting modes offers various effects, such as steady light, flashing and changing brightness. A memory function is also useful for everyday use, as it can save the last selected setting. A timer reduces the need for daily adjustments and can help preserve battery life.

Before installation, the string should be fully unwound and checked for damaged cables. With a waterproof string of lights or an IP44 model, the battery compartment must always be kept out of puddles and away from direct jets of water. For indoor areas, a dry, dust-free surface is sufficient.
Compared with traditional light sources, LEDs usually produce very little heat. Nevertheless, they should not come into contact with easily flammable materials, candles, heaters or naked flames. For a Christmas LED garland, secure attachment to stairs, doors or mantelpieces is recommended. The batteries should be removed before storage.

Runtime depends on the number of LEDs, lighting mode, battery capacity and usage. Steady light usually requires a different amount of energy from an intermittent mode. As runtime information is not available for every model, the string lights should be switched off when not in use for an extended period, and the batteries removed during longer-term storage.
This depends on the IP rating and the construction. IP20 is suitable only for dry indoor areas. IP44 protects against splashing water, but not against immersion.
