A bed with storage can hold clothes, bedding or items you rarely use, freeing up valuable wardrobe space. But not every storage bed is right for every home. It’s not just the colour and upholstery that matter: consider the type of storage, mattress size, weight capacity and the space available around the bed.
A bed with a storage compartment may sound practical at first. But drawers need enough room to open at the side or foot of the bed. A hydraulic bed with a lift-up slatted base offers more flexibility, but is best for items you don’t need every day. Also check that the mechanism can open fully without hitting a wall, radiator or bedside table.
A 90x200 cm bed needs a mattress of exactly those dimensions, but the bed itself is usually wider and longer. A 140x200 cm bed can take up considerably more floor space once you allow for the headboard, side panels and storage structure. So measure the whole frame, including the space you need to move around it — not just the mattress.
LED lighting, a USB port or USB-C charging can be useful, but they’re no substitute for a sturdy frame. Check the details for the materials, slatted base, maximum weight capacity and assembly. With electrical features, keep cables, the power supply and connections protected from moisture. A mattress is not included with several of the models featured here.
Check that the size you want suits your needs. A 90x200 cm single bed is suitable for a teenager’s room, guest room or small studio flat. A 140x200 cm bed offers more sleeping space for one person, or can be used as a compact double bed.
The weight capacity should be clearly stated. Be sure to distinguish between maximum static load and maximum user weight. For example, one product may state a maximum static load of 500 kg, while another gives a maximum user weight of 113 or 150 kg. These figures are not directly comparable.
A metal bed with storage may be reinforced with steel tubes, extra crossbars and several legs. A upholstered bed with storage often combines metal or wood-based materials with fabric or faux-leather upholstery. Once assembled, check that all the screws, joints and feet are secure.

As well as the sleeping area, you’ll need to allow for the headboard, side frame and the direction in which the storage opens. With drawers, the key measurement is how far they extend; with a hydraulic bed, it’s the clearance needed to lift the base fully. Measure the entire footprint, not just 90x200 or 140x200 cm.
A hydraulic storage bed can generally be used regularly. Before buying, though, check the maximum weight capacity, opening mechanism and safety clearance around hands and other objects. Children should never operate the mechanism unsupervised when opening or closing the bed.
Its lifespan depends on factors such as the materials, load, floor surface, assembly and care. Pull drawers out evenly, don’t overload the storage space, and check the screws and joints regularly. Protect cables for LED lighting and charging functions from kinks and liquids.
