The daily commute through the city can be a challenge: traffic jams, crowded public transport, and the constant search for parking cost time and energy. A city e-bike offers a practical and efficient alternative. It allows you to move flexibly and in an eco-friendly way, whether you're heading to work, running errands, or enjoying a relaxed ride through the park.
This article serves as a guide. We will highlight the most important criteria to consider when choosing an e-bike for the city and present a selection of models with different specialities. The goal is to provide you with an objective basis for your decision.
Choosing the right model largely depends on your individual needs. Three factors are particularly relevant for urban use.
The placement of the motor has a significant impact on handling. On an e-bike with a mid-drive motor, the drive unit is located centrally at the bottom bracket. This ensures a low, balanced center of gravity and a very natural, intuitive riding feel, as the power is transferred directly to the chain. This design is particularly advantageous on inclines and in stop-and-go traffic. Hub-drive motors, which are built into the rear wheel hub, provide a powerful push from behind and are often found in sportier or particularly lightweight models.
The range specified by manufacturers is determined under ideal conditions. In practice, it is influenced by factors such as rider weight, the selected assistance level, the route profile, and the outside temperature. For daily use as an e-bike commuter, a battery capacity of 400 to 500 watt-hours (Wh) is a good benchmark. This typically allows for a realistic range of 60 to 80 kilometers, which is sufficient for most commutes for an entire week. A removable battery increases flexibility, as it can be conveniently charged at home or in the office.
Do you need to carry the bike into the basement or your apartment? Then the total weight plays a crucial role. A lightweight e-bike under 20 kg makes transport much easier. In addition to weight, the frame type is decisive for comfort. Models for women's and men's city e-bikes with a low step-through frame allow for comfortable mounting and dismounting, which is very pleasant in city traffic with frequent stops. Diamond frames, on the other hand, offer greater rigidity, which can be an advantage for a sportier riding style. All models presented here are classified as pedelecs (up to 25 km/h) and are legally considered bicycles.
Based on the criteria mentioned, we have compiled a selection of models that cover the different needs of urban riders.

In common usage, the terms are often used interchangeably. Technically, a pedelec (up to 25 km/h) (Pedal Electric Cycle) is a bicycle whose motor only provides assistance when the rider is pedaling—and only up to a speed of 25 km/h. Legally, it is treated the same as a bicycle. S-Pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) or e-bikes that can be ridden by throttle without pedaling are considered mopeds and require insurance and a license.
An e-bike with a mid-drive motor offers very stable and natural handling due to the central and low position of its weight. This is particularly advantageous in city traffic with frequent stops, when starting at traffic lights, and on inclines. The riding experience most closely resembles that of a classic bicycle, which many riders find very pleasant.
To maximize the battery's lifespan, you should protect it from extreme temperatures (heat and frost). When not in use, store the battery in a dry place at room temperature (approx. 10–20 °C). It is recommended not to leave the battery fully charged or completely depleted for extended periods. A charge level between 30% and 60% is ideal for long-term storage, for example, over the winter.
