Buying a blender: types, key criteria and suitable recommendations for every kitchen

A blender should reliably purée, chop or prepare smoothies as part of your everyday routine. However, technical specifications and marketing terms often make choosing the right model unnecessarily complicated. Wattage alone says little about a blender’s actual suitability. A large jug is not automatically practical either if it is difficult to clean or unsuitable for small portions.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter the most important selection criteria and match them to specific usage situations. This makes it easier to decide whether a hand blender, jug blender, smoothie maker or personal blender is right for your kitchen.

Common pitfalls when buying a blender

1. Assuming a high wattage means versatile performance

Motor power is a technical guide, but it is not the only indication of quality. Blade design, speed, container size, operating time and automatic safety shut-off are also important. A compact 300-watt personal blender may be suitable for individual smoothies, while a 1,000-watt jug blender is more likely to be designed for larger quantities and harder ingredients.

2. Ice-crush function without a suitable use case

The description blender with an ice-crush function does not mean that every type or quantity of ice can be processed. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on filling quantities and operation. This function can be useful for the occasional cold drink. However, if you mainly prepare soups or soft fruit, you may not need it.

3. Underestimating cleaning and accessories

A blender with numerous attachments can be versatile, but it also takes up more storage space. It is important to check which parts can actually be removed and which are dishwasher-safe. With every appliance, remember: The motor housing must generally not be immersed in water. Cutting blades should be cleaned carefully because of the risk of injury.

Check these parameters before buying

Appliance type and portion size

  • Hand blender or stick blender: Suitable for soups, sauces, baby food and puréeing food directly in the saucepan. A model with a chopper and whisk offers added versatility for chopping and whisking.
  • Jug blender: Practical for several portions, shakes, sauces and, depending on the model, ice. A 1.5-litre container is more suitable for families or larger quantities.
  • Personal blender: Designed for individual portions on the go. Blending and drinking containers with secure lids are ideal for the office, sports or commuting.
  • Smoothie maker: Often compact and designed for drinks. Before buying, check whether hard ingredients, nuts or ice are permitted according to the instructions.

Power, speed and operating time

A wattage rating describes the electrical power input; it does not automatically indicate the blending result. You should also look for:

  • available speed settings and a pulse or turbo function,
  • the recommended maximum operating time,
  • overheating protection or automatic safety shut-off,
  • suitability for frozen fruit, nuts or ice.

Many personal blenders may only be operated for short intervals. A cooling break may be required between several blending cycles.

Materials, capacity and cleaning

A BPA-free blender may appeal to buyers who pay close attention to the material specifications of parts that come into contact with food. However, BPA-free does not mean that all components are equally heat-resistant. Hot liquids should only be processed if this is expressly permitted in the instructions.

Glass containers are scratch-resistant and temperature-resistant within the manufacturer’s specified limits, but they can be heavier. Tritan or plastic containers are generally lighter and more practical for use on the go. A dishwasher-safe blender makes cleaning easier, but the blades, seals and permitted dishwasher areas must still be checked.

Use, care and ongoing costs

For consistent results, solid ingredients should first be cut into smaller pieces. When using a blender for soups and shakes, liquids usually go into the container first, followed by soft ingredients and finally hard ingredients. Do not exceed the maximum fill line.

Hot liquids require particular care. According to the product specifications, some appliances, including certain personal blenders, are only intended for liquids up to 60 °C. Unplug the appliance and remove moving parts before cleaning. Clean the motor housing with a slightly damp cloth.

Electricity costs depend on power and operating time. An appliance with a higher wattage uses more energy over the same operating period, but it does not necessarily work faster or suit every recipe quantity better. For daily individual portions, a small smoothie blender may be more economical than a large jug blender that is only used for a short time.

Frequently asked questions about blenders

Which blender is suitable for smoothies?

A personal blender with a drinking container is suitable for individual portions. Families or people who prepare several portions can choose a jug blender with a larger container. For frozen fruit and ice, follow the manufacturer’s specifications regarding the blades, filling quantity and operating time.

How long does a blender last?

It is not possible to give a general fixed lifespan. It depends on how frequently the appliance is used, the ingredients, the cleaning method and whether the maximum operating time is observed. Overheating, hard foreign objects, overfilling and incorrect cleaning can place strain on the motor and seals.

Is a hand blender or jug blender more practical?

A hand blender saves space and can be used directly in the saucepan. A jug blender processes larger quantities in a closed container and, depending on the model, may offer functions such as ice crushing. The deciding factors are therefore the types of recipes you make, the available worktop space and your typical portion size.
