Buying a Backpack: How to Find the Right Model for Everyday Life, Work and Travel

When you want to buy a backpack, you will often compare the colour, brand and price first. However, other details are crucial for practical everyday use: dimensions, compartment layout, material and carrying system. A visually appealing backpack can prove impractical if it cannot accommodate A4 documents, leaves your laptop unprotected or exceeds the permitted hand-luggage dimensions.

Common pitfalls when buying a backpack

1. “Water-resistant” is confused with “waterproof”

Many models are made from water-repellent or water-resistant polyester. This can keep out light rain, but it does not automatically mean the construction is permanently waterproof. Seams, zips and uncovered openings can still allow moisture to enter.

So always check the specific manufacturer’s information. A waterproof backpack should have clearly defined protective features. With a water-resistant backpack, we recommend using an additional protective cover for your laptop, documents and spare clothing.

2. The laptop compartment is selected based only on screen size

The specification “15.6 inches” or “17 inches” describes the screen diagonal, not the device’s exact external dimensions. Depending on the casing, a laptop may be too wide or too thick for the compartment despite having the stated screen size.

Before buying, compare the internal dimensions of the laptop compartment with the dimensions of your device. Padding is useful, but it cannot replace a properly fitting size. A backpack with a laptop compartment should also be designed so that the device does not rest directly on the base.

3. Volume and external dimensions are not considered together

A large capacity may sound practical, but in everyday use it can be unnecessarily heavy or cumbersome. For rail commuters and students, 20 to 30 litres is often sufficient. A travel backpack or hand-luggage backpack, on the other hand, needs more storage space while still complying with the requirements of the relevant airline.

Always check both values: the capacity in litres and the height, width and depth. With expandable models, the additional depth should only be used if it complies with the airline’s regulations.

The most important selection criteria

Intended use and storage space

  • School and university: A school backpack should be able to hold A4 documents, books, a water bottle and, where applicable, a laptop. Separate compartments make it easier to stay organised.
  • Work and commuting: A laptop backpack with a padded compartment, organiser pockets and sturdy zips is suitable for the office, university and daily rail travel.
  • Business trips: A business backpack benefits from a luggage trolley strap, a main compartment that opens wide and a flexible internal layout.
  • Short trips: A hand-luggage backpack with a clamshell opening is easier to inspect at the airport and simpler to pack neatly.
  • Everyday life and leisure: A lightweight backpack with a few easily accessible compartments is sufficient for smaller personal belongings and day trips.

Carrying comfort and weight

A padded back and adjustable shoulder straps can improve weight distribution. However, the backpack’s own weight is also important. A model with numerous reinforcements and additional compartments may already be considerably heavier when empty than a minimalist daypack.

Pay attention to:

  1. Wide, adjustable shoulder straps.
  2. Back padding suited to your height.
  3. A sturdy handle for short distances.
  4. Sensible weight distribution close to your back.
  5. An empty weight that suits the contents you plan to carry.

The description backpack for women and men usually means a universal fit. Nevertheless, for a comfortable fit you should still consider the back length, strap adjustment and backpack width.

Material, care and zips

Polyester and nylon are commonly used for backpacks. However, the material designation alone says nothing about the actual durability. Reinforced seams, neatly finished zips and strong strap attachments are more relevant for everyday use.

Also follow the care instructions. For several models, machine washing is not permitted because it may damage coatings and padding or affect the backpack’s ability to retain its shape. Cleaning with a damp cloth and mild detergent is often sufficient. A lightweight backpack made from thin fabric should not be overloaded or filled with sharp-edged objects.

FAQs about buying a backpack

What backpack capacity is suitable for school and work?

For school, university and everyday office use, 20 to 30 litres is often practical. In addition to books or work documents, allow space for a laptop, charging cable, water bottle and personal belongings. If you regularly carry sportswear or additional shoes, you will need a larger capacity.

How long does a backpack usually last?

Its lifespan depends on the material, workmanship, level of use and care. Overloading, sharp-edged objects and zips that are kept open for long periods can put greater strain on seams and fabric. Clean the backpack according to the manufacturer’s instructions and regularly check the straps, seams and fastenings.

What are the ongoing running costs of a backpack?

An ordinary backpack normally has no regular running costs. You may incur expenses for rain covers, laptop sleeves or replacement parts. A cat backpack with a fan and lighting also requires a suitable power bank, which is not included. Check the power bank’s usage instructions and keep power connections away from moisture.
