Buying household appliances: a buying guide for the kitchen, utility room and living area

When you want to buy household appliances, you will often compare price, brand and appearance first. However, this is not enough for large appliances and televisions. Inadequate dimensions, permanently high running costs or missing connections can turn an apparent bargain into an expensive mistake.

This buying guide explains which details matter before you buy, which advertising claims deserve closer scrutiny and which appliances suit different households.

Common pitfalls when buying household appliances

1. Energy rating without considering consumption

For many product categories, energy efficiency classes range from A to G. However, a good rating does not automatically mean low overall costs. The specific consumption per 100 cycles, per year or per hour of operation is also important, as is how the appliance is actually used.

For example, a dishwasher with a larger capacity that is used infrequently may be less suitable than a compact appliance loaded to match your needs. Always compare:

  • Energy consumption per washing or dishwasher cycle
  • Water consumption
  • Annual consumption, where stated
  • Capacity and typical load
  • Electricity price and expected frequency of use

You can find more appliances with different energy classes in our selection by energy class.

2. Features that do not suit your everyday needs

Steam programmes, app control, quick programmes and special hygiene options can be useful. However, they do not automatically make an appliance more practical. If you mainly wash small loads, you may not need a washer-dryer with a high washing capacity. If you rarely cook, you may gain less from an especially powerful cooker hood.

Before buying, check whether you will use the feature regularly and whether it involves additional installation or ongoing costs.

3. Dimensions and connections checked too late

The external dimensions alone are not enough. For washing machines, washer-dryers, dishwashers and fridges, you must also consider door clearance, hose routing, ventilation and the distance from the wall. Built-in appliances also require the correct niche dimensions, furniture door and plinth height.

For example, a fully integrated dishwasher is supplied without a furniture door. During installation, the waste connection, power socket and adjustable feet must also be compatible with your existing kitchen.

The most important parameters explained clearly

Capacity to suit the size of your household

For single people and couples, 7 kg washing capacity or a compact dishwasher may be sufficient. Families who run wash cycles frequently are more likely to benefit from 8 to 10 kg. With a washer-dryer, remember that the drying load is often smaller than the washing load. An appliance with 10 kg washing and 6 kg drying capacity must therefore not be loaded with 10 kg for a combined programme.

For a fridge, the balance between the fridge and freezer compartments should suit your shopping habits. A fridge with freezer compartment saves space, while a separate freezer can hold more supplies.

Noise levels and spin speed

The noise rating in dB(A) is particularly relevant for open-plan kitchens or flats. Washing machines usually specify separate noise levels for washing and spinning. A higher spin speed can reduce residual moisture, but it is not necessary for every fabric programme.

For a heat pump tumble dryer, you should also check condensation efficiency, filter maintenance and whether a direct drainage connection is possible. Automatic moisture sensing can prevent textiles from being dried for longer than necessary.

Displays, smart features and connections

A 4K Smart TV should not be chosen based on resolution alone. Also check the operating system, app selection, tuner, HDMI connections, refresh rate and VESA dimensions. A QLED TV or Mini-LED TV may be worth considering for specific picture requirements, but room size, viewing distance and lighting conditions remain crucial.

For appliances with app control, you should also check Wi-Fi compatibility, the required app, privacy information and the stated software support period.

Frequently asked questions about buying household appliances

Which household appliances use particularly large amounts of electricity in everyday use?

Consumption depends on the appliance type, model and how it is used. Tumble dryers, refrigeration appliances and freezers often run more frequently or for longer than other appliances. Compare the stated annual consumption and avoid choosing a size that is significantly larger than you actually need.

Is a washer-dryer worth it?

A washer-dryer saves space and can be practical for flats without a separate area for drying clothes. However, check the separate washing and drying capacities, consumption in the combined programme and programme duration. If you dry clothes frequently, separate appliances—a washing machine and heat pump tumble dryer—may offer greater flexibility.

How long do household appliances last?

Lifespan depends on factors including usage, maintenance, water hardness, loading and the availability of repairs. Clean filters and seals regularly, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid overloading. Always distinguish warranty or motor warranty claims from the actual scope of the warranty.
