Buy LED Strips: A Guide to Choosing the Right Option for Your Living Room, Smart Home, TV or Car

LED strips create indirect lighting on furniture, behind the television or as part of a gaming setup. Before buying, however, it is worth taking a close look at the technical specifications and installation accessories. Terms such as “RGB”, “Wi-Fi” or “self-adhesive” alone reveal little about whether an LED light strip is suitable for your intended use.

This buying guide from the Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer helps you avoid common purchasing mistakes and choose the right LED strip based on its location, control method, power supply and IP rating.

Common pitfalls when buying LED strips

1. Length and cutting requirements are misjudged

A 5 m LED strip will not automatically fit around every piece of furniture or television. Before ordering, measure all the edges and take the position of the power supply into account. It is also important to check whether the strip can be cut at the marked points. Cutting in the wrong place can damage the circuit.

TV backlighting kits often support specific screen sizes. A kit for 55 to 65 inches should not be used indiscriminately with smaller or larger televisions.

2. “Waterproof” is treated as the same as every IP rating

The IP rating describes protection against solid objects and moisture. IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. IP44 protects against splashing water under defined conditions, but is not designed for immersion in water.

For bathrooms, kitchens or sheltered outdoor areas, an LED strip with IP44 may be more suitable than an IP20 model. For garden paths and patio lighting, solar products such as a solar LED fairy light chain are also a separate product category and should not be treated as equivalent to a mains-powered LED strip.

3. Smart home features are overestimated

A Wi-Fi LED strip does not automatically require a hub, but it often needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Some products also support Bluetooth. If you want to use Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or Samsung SmartThings, check the specific compatibility carefully.

Matter-compatible LED lighting can make it easier to integrate a product with different smart home systems. However, Matter does not replace checking the app, voice assistant, power supply and required frequency band.

The most important buying criteria for LED light strips

Length, cutting and installation

Measure the planned route, including corners and the connection path. A self-adhesive LED strip adheres most reliably to a dry, smooth and grease-free surface. Dust, rough walls or silicone-based cleaning products can impair adhesion.

Tight 90-degree bends can put strain on the circuit board. Flexible models should therefore be installed using gentle curves. For longer runs, check whether additional connectors or a suitable power supply are required.

Colour temperature, brightness and dimming

Single-colour LED strips with warm white light are often suitable for living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white light is more commonly chosen for cupboards, worktops or functional areas. An RGB LED strip provides coloured light, while RGBIC or RGBCCT models can, depending on the design, offer several colour zones or adjustable shades of white.

Look for specific details such as lumens, colour temperature in Kelvin and maximum power consumption. A dimmable LED strip allows you to adjust the brightness gradually, but it does not replace separate room lighting when even, functional illumination is required.

Control and power supply

An LED strip with a remote control can be operated without a smartphone. With an LED strip featuring app control, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or a smart home protocol may be added, depending on the model. The following questions are relevant when choosing:

  • Is a power supply included?
  • Is an app or account required?
  • Does the control system work without an internet connection?
  • Is the LED strip designed for a 230-volt connection, USB or a battery?
  • Does the power supply voltage match the product?

For cupboards and hallways, an LED cupboard light with motion sensor can be more practical than a light strip that stays on continuously. For vehicles, however, you must take the 12-volt connection, cable routing and installation location into account.

Product selection by user profile

Suitable for: Budget-conscious beginners
LED Strip Light with mains plug, 5 m

LED Strip Light with mains plug, 5 m

Why this product suits this profile: This 5 m multi-coloured light strip comes with a power supply, remote control and self-adhesive backing. It is suitable for shelves, stair railings or indoor LED TV backlighting.

How this product avoids the pitfall

The stated length, mains operation and IR remote control are clearly specified. The IP20 rating limits use to dry indoor areas.

Main benefit & strengths

150 LEDs across 5 m, self-adhesive installation and remote control.

Suitable for: Quality-conscious buyers
LED Strip RGBCCT Wi-Fi Matter, dimmable, 5 m

LED Strip, RGBCCT, Wi-Fi, Matter, dimmable, 5 m

Why this product suits this profile: This model combines RGB colours with adjustable white light from 2,700 to 6,500 K, continuously adjustable dimming and Matter support for various smart home platforms.

How this product avoids the pitfall

The app connects via 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while Matter, voice control and marked cut points are explicitly specified. With IP20, use remains limited to dry indoor areas.

Main benefit & strengths

RGBCCT, continuously adjustable dimming, timers and scenes, plus Matter compatibility without requiring an additional hub.

Suitable for: Special applications & frequent users
LED Strip Lamp, 60 cm, USB rechargeable

LED Strip Lamp, 60 cm, USB rechargeable

Why this product suits this profile: This compact light bar is designed for cupboards, shelves, dressing areas and worktops. A motion sensor switches it on automatically when movement is detected.

How this product avoids the pitfall

Automatic switch-off after around 30 seconds and battery operation prevent unnecessary continuous use. The light bar is designed for dry indoor areas.

Main benefit & strengths

2,200 mAh battery, USB charging, magnetic mount and motion detection with a range of around 2 m.

Installation and operating advice

  • Fully lay out LED strips before installation and plan the position of the power supply.
  • Clean the adhesive surfaces, allow them to dry and press the strip down evenly.
  • Do not leave an LED strip on its reel while operating, as heat can build up.
  • Do not cover power supplies and ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Keep IP20 products away from water and high humidity.
  • For an LED strip for a car, use only the specified voltage and suitable fuses.
  • Heat dissipation, the correct voltage and gentle bending are crucial for a long service life.

Frequently asked questions about LED strips

How much electricity does an LED strip use?

Consumption depends on the length, LED density, brightness and colour. The specified power consumption in watts is the key figure. For a 5 m model with 24 W, the maximum consumption during eight hours of daily operation is 0.192 kWh per day. The actual figure may be lower when the light is dimmed.

How long do LED strips last?

It is not possible to give a single service-life figure for all models. Continuous operation, heat, an incorrect power supply, frequent bending and a damp environment can put greater strain on the components. Correct installation, good ventilation and using the supplied power supply help ensure operation as intended.

Can every LED strip be cut shorter?

No. Strips may only be cut at the cutting points marked by the manufacturer. For TV lighting kits, cutting may be expressly prohibited. Before cutting, check the product description and installation instructions.
