Buying plush toys: a guide for children, fans and collectors

If you’re looking to buy plush toys, there’s plenty to choose from, including classic soft toys, licensed characters, giant plush toys and blind boxes. Product photos can look very similar, even when age recommendations, care requirements, materials, sizes and intended uses differ considerably. Taking a careful look before you buy can help you avoid making the wrong choice.

Common pitfalls when buying plush toys

1. Confusing size with practicality

A 100 cm giant plush toy might make an eye-catching decoration or cuddle companion, but it needs plenty of space. Compact models measuring around 19 to 35 cm are usually easier to pack away for travel, pushchair outings or smaller children’s bedrooms. Be sure to check the product measurements carefully, too: packaging dimensions may differ from the actual size of the soft toy.

2. “Washable” doesn’t mean the same thing for every product

Some models can be washed at 30 °C on a delicate or wool cycle. Others are designed for surface cleaning only, using a damp cloth. With electronic versions, the sound module needs to be removed before washing. Overlooking this could damage the material, filling or functions.

3. Blind boxes and collectible figures aren’t automatically suitable for young children

With a blind box, you won’t know what’s inside until you open it. Random designs, small charms or plastic parts are often aimed more at older children, teenagers or adult collectors. Several product descriptions specifically warn about small parts and a possible choking hazard. These products are therefore not suitable for children under three; some ranges even recommend them for ages eight or 15 and over.

Key things to consider

Age recommendation and small parts

The age guidance on the product page and packaging is an important factor in your decision. When choosing a plush toy for children, parents should pay particular attention to the following:

  • Does it have button eyes, plastic parts, charms or small balls?
  • Are the seams, appliqués and fastenings securely made?
  • Is the age recommendation appropriate for the child?
  • Will younger children need to be supervised?

A simple model without removable accessories may be more practical for younger children than a highly detailed collectible figure.

Material and care

Polyester plush and polyester filling are common in many soft toys. What matters, though, is the specific care guidance. Some products are machine washable, while others should only be wiped clean with care. If you’re buying a soft toy as a gift, check the material details, washing symbols and advice about heat sources.

Size, weight and where it will be used

Larger models, such as a plush bear or an XXL panda, are well suited to a bed or sofa. Small figures or an anime plush toy measuring around 14 to 20 cm are often a better fit for a desk, rucksack or shelf. A Pokémon plush toy or a Squishmallows model can be used for play as well as collecting, as long as the age and care information is suitable.

Random selection with collectible products

Blind box plush toys and other collectible figures often come in a randomly selected design. Some ranges include standard designs as well as so-called chase or hidden versions. The exact odds depend on the product and don’t guarantee a particular design. If you’re giving someone a specific character as a gift, it’s best to choose an individual product where you can select the design.

Frequently asked questions about buying plush toys

Which plush toys are suitable for children aged three and over?

Choose models with an age recommendation that matches or exceeds the child’s age and no small parts that could come loose easily. If the toy has button eyes, plastic accessories, charms or sound modules, parents should follow the safety guidance and supervise younger children where necessary.

How should you clean a soft toy?

It depends on the product information. Machine-washable models should only be cleaned using the specified programme and temperature. For other plush toys, wiping the surface with a slightly damp cloth is enough. Remove electronic modules and batteries before cleaning if the instructions say to do so.

Are blind box plush toys and collectible figures suitable as gifts?

They can make a nice little gift or collector’s item for someone who enjoys surprises. As the design is chosen at random and the toy may contain small parts, check the age recommendation, packaging information and intended use before buying. If you have a particular design in mind, choosing a specific Pokémon plush toy, anime plush toy or another individual model is usually a safer bet.
