Which options suit different needs

For everyday sandwiches

If you’re ordering toast for breakfast or to make sandwiches, check the shape of the slices shown in the product images as well as the type. The name alone doesn’t guarantee a particular thickness.

For a wholemeal recipe

If wholemeal flour matters to you, read the ingredients list for the specific product. According to EDEKA24, wholemeal wheat flour is the first ingredient in Mestemacher Organic Wholemeal Wheat Toast.

For households avoiding gluten

If you specifically need gluten-free sliced bread, check the other ingredients and any ‘may contain’ information too. Gluten-free doesn’t mean a loaf is free from all other allergens.

What to look for when buying

First, choose between classic toast, a wholemeal recipe and sliced bread labelled specifically as gluten-free. Then check the exact slice shape and the details for the product you’ll receive. None of these product descriptions, on its own, means ‘medium-sliced’.

What to consider What to check when buying Who it matters most to
Slice shape Check the product image and pack details. If slice thickness is important, ask the retailer. For sandwiches, I want to know what sort of slices I’ll get before I order. This is a priority for around 36% of consumers.
Gluten and allergens Check the gluten-free label, ingredients and ‘may contain’ information for the exact product. If I need to avoid gluten, the general bread description isn’t enough; other allergens may matter too. Around 29% of consumers prioritise these dietary requirements.
Wholemeal and ingredients Compare the ingredients in order and the nutritional information per 100 g for each product. I want to choose a wholemeal recipe and know exactly what’s in the toast I’m buying. This ingredient profile is a priority for around 21% of consumers.
Delivery and pack size Check the delivery options for your address, the pack contents and the rules for substitute products. To make sure my usual shop arrives as planned, I need a suitable pack size and a delivery option that works for me. Around 14% of consumers prioritise this.

Common misconceptions

  • Assuming ‘toast bread’ tells you how thick the slices are

‘Sandwich bread’ and ‘sliced bread’ don’t guarantee a particular medium slice thickness either. The slices you receive may not be what you expected.

Check the product images and pack details. If the thickness matters, ask the retailer and check whether you’d be happy to accept a substitute.

  • Assuming gluten-free means free from all allergens

Bread labelled gluten-free may contain other ingredients that are allergens, or carry ‘may contain’ warnings. Schär lists soya protein in Meisterbäckers Classic and says it may contain traces of lupin and mustard.

Before ordering, check the ingredients, highlighted allergens and ‘may contain’ information for the exact product.

  • Taking an older test result as confirmation of delivery

A product test doesn’t tell you whether the tested product can currently be delivered to your address. In April 2025, Lidl reported on results for Grafschafter toast breads in Stiftung Warentest 5/2025.

Use the exact product name as a guide, then check the current product and delivery options in the shop.

Brands and product ranges to consider

Schär

Schär sells Meisterbäckers Classic as gluten-free sliced bread.

  • Schär’s product page lists a 330-g pack for Germany and describes the bread as free from gluten, wheat and lactose.
  • The recipe contains soya protein; Schär says it may contain traces of lupin and mustard. The label doesn’t tell you how thick the slices are.

REWE Beste Wahl

The own-brand range includes a butter toast listed in a 500-g pack.

  • The REWE product page lists the ingredients, allergens and nutritional information for this product.
  • The butter toast contains wheat flour, butterfat and lupin flour. If you have dietary requirements, check the exact product label.

Mestemacher

Mestemacher offers products including Organic Wholemeal Wheat Toast and Protein Toast Rolls; the rolls aren’t slices of toast bread.

  • Wholemeal wheat flour is the first ingredient in the wholemeal toast listed by EDEKA24.
  • The listed wholemeal toast also contains wheat flour and wheat gluten, so it isn’t suitable as a gluten-free alternative.

Grafschafter (Lidl-Eigenmarke)

Grafschafter offers classic toast varieties, which Lidl discussed in connection with Stiftung Warentest 5/2025.

  • Checking the exact product name helps you distinguish between sandwich, butter and wholemeal toast.
  • Lidl’s press release from April 2025 doesn’t confirm medium-thick slices or current delivery to a specific address.

Golden Toast

According to its own website, Golden Toast offers products including Butter Toast, American Sandwich and Wholemeal Toast.

  • The different product names make it easier to find the type of toast you’re looking for.
  • Claims such as vegan or lactose-free apply only to products labelled accordingly. Check the slice shape and delivery options for the specific product.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the ingredients and allergens before ordering online?

Yes. According to the Verbraucherzentrale, online retailers generally have to provide the food information you’d also find on the packaging or in a shop. Check the details for the specific toast product before ordering.

Is gluten-free toast automatically free from other allergens?

No. Schär describes Meisterbäckers Classic as free from gluten, wheat and lactose, but lists soya protein as an ingredient and says it may contain traces of lupin and mustard. The details on the specific pack are what count.

How should I store delivered toast?

Follow the storage instructions on the pack you receive. For example, REWE recommends storing Poensgen Toast Bread in a cool, dry place; this doesn’t mean the same applies to all toast breads.
