Buying a Fridge: A Guide for Your Home, Kitchen and Travels

A fridge is one of those appliances that runs every day and takes up space, uses electricity and demands attention for many years. Your buying decision should therefore not depend solely on the price or eye-catching extra features. The key considerations are usable capacity, energy consumption, noise level, installation dimensions and how you actually intend to use it.

Common Buying Weaknesses and Marketing Traps

1. Gross capacity is confused with usable storage space
Large litre figures may look impressive, but they do not always tell you how much room is actually left for food. Shelves, drawers and air circulation all take up space. With a fridge freezer, you should consider the usable capacity of the fridge and freezer compartments separately.

2. The energy-efficiency rating alone is not enough for comparing costs
The EU energy-efficiency scale runs from A to G. A fridge with energy-efficiency class C may be a suitable choice, but the stated annual consumption in kilowatt hours is also important when assessing running costs. Two appliances in the same class may use different amounts of electricity depending on their size and technology.

3. Convenience features are treated as essential equipment
No Frost, app control, rapid cooling and separate cooling circuits can be useful in everyday life. However, they do not automatically increase the practical benefits for every household. If you rarely freeze food, you may not need a large freezer compartment. If you live with an open-plan kitchen, on the other hand, you should pay particular attention to the noise level.

The Most Important Parameters Before Buying

1. Dimensions, Door Opening and Installation Location

Measure the height, width and depth of the space where the appliance will stand, as well as doorways, staircases and the route it will take during delivery. The door must also be able to open wide enough. A reversible door makes it easier to adapt the fridge to your kitchen. Tall appliances require a stable, level surface. The ventilation clearances specified by the manufacturer must not be blocked.

A freestanding fridge offers more flexibility when positioning it than a built-in appliance. For small flats, offices or guest rooms, an under-counter or table-top fridge may also be suitable. However, a 45-litre model with a small freezer compartment cannot be compared with a full-size household appliance.

2. Usable Capacity to Suit Your Household

Single people and couples can often manage with a compact fridge or a smaller fridge freezer. Families are more likely to benefit from separate drawers, several shelves and a sufficiently large freezer compartment. A side-by-side fridge offers plenty of storage space, but at around 90 centimetres wide, it requires considerably more room than a standard appliance.

Pay attention to the layout: a large total usable capacity may be of little benefit if the freezer compartment is too small for your supplies. If you regularly batch-cook, several freezer drawers and a clear overview are often more practical than one large compartment.

3. Cooling Technology, Noise Level and Controls

A No Frost fridge prevents ice from forming in the freezer compartment of suitable appliances and reduces the need for manual defrosting. LessFrost, by contrast, reduces ice formation but does not necessarily eliminate the need to defrost. Multi-Air-Flow systems distribute cold air throughout the interior; food should still not be placed directly in front of the air vents.

The noise level is stated in dB(A). Levels of around 35 to 39 dB(A) are often more pleasant for open-plan kitchens than considerably noisier appliances. With a portable compressor cool box or camping fridge, the stated level is often higher. For mobile appliances, also check the temperature range, power connection and battery protection.

Practical Tips for Operation and Longevity

  • Do not place the fridge directly next to radiators, cookers or in direct sunlight.
  • Allow hot food to cool before putting it into the appliance.
  • Keep air vents clear and leave a little space between food items.
  • Clean the seals, shelves and interior regularly with a mild cleaning product.
  • With mobile appliances, check the connection to the vehicle battery, cable routing and selected battery-protection level.
  • Do not overfill the fridge, as this can restrict air circulation.

Fridge FAQ

How much electricity does an energy-efficient fridge use?

Consumption depends on the usable capacity, design, ambient temperature and how the appliance is used. Compare the EU energy label and the stated annual consumption in kWh. Energy-efficiency class C provides guidance, but is not the only indicator of running costs.

How long does a fridge normally last?

Its service life depends on the compressor, seals, ventilation, maintenance and operating conditions. Regular cleaning, a level position and sufficient clearance from the wall can help support reliable operation. These factors do not provide any specific guarantees or indicate a particular service life.

Is a 12V car fridge suitable for longer trips?

A compressor cooling appliance can be suitable for camping, motorhomes and road trips if the temperature range, capacity and connection meet your needs. Before buying, check 12/24-volt compatibility, battery protection, noise levels and whether a portable power supply or solar panel needs to be purchased separately.
