Artificial flowers are a practical decorating solution for rooms, vases, balconies and events. However, not all models look right for long or suit every location. If you choose only by colour and price, you often overlook important details.
Three common buying mistakes crop up particularly often:
For indoor use, flowers made from silk, fabric or plastic are often suitable. Silk flowers often look soft and textured thanks to their textile surface. A wire inside the stem allows you to adjust the shape to fit a vase or an arrangement.
For artificial flowers for outdoors, the product description should explicitly mention weather-resistant, UV-resistant or outdoor-appropriate materials. “For indoor and outdoor use” does not automatically mean unrestricted use in persistent rain, frost or strong sunlight. Covered balconies, sheltered patios and window boxes are usually less demanding than completely exposed locations.
Measure the vase, planter or hanging basket before you buy. For artificial flowers for vases, the following details are relevant:
Short mini hydrangeas around 33 cm long, for example, are suitable for small table arrangements. Long trailing plants or hanging flowers over 70 cm long, on the other hand, need enough space so that the branches are not unnaturally squashed together.
Low-maintenance artificial flowers need no water and do not require cutting. Depending on the material, dust can be removed with a soft cloth, a brush or gently with water. Textile blooms should not generally be soaked in water. For delicate materials, cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions is recommended.
Also look out for mouldable stems. An internal wire makes it easier to straighten them after transport and allows for individual artificial flower arrangements. For products with a slight smell, a well-ventilated room for a day or two can be helpful. Small individual parts should be kept out of reach of children under three years old and pets.

Heavy vases offer more stability. For lightweight containers, decorative stones, sand or a suitable floral foam can help. Bendable stems can be adjusted to the height of the container. For a natural look, use branches of different lengths and do not place all the blooms at the same height.
The lifespan depends on the material, workmanship, sunlight, moisture and cleaning. Indoor areas without direct sunlight usually put less strain on colours and surfaces.
