Buying a Car Dashcam: What Matters for Image Quality, Parking Mode and Accessories

A car dashcam is designed to document journeys, capture critical situations and, depending on its features, record while the vehicle is parked. However, product listings often contain terms that promise more at first glance than you actually need in everyday use. If you focus only on “4K”, “night vision” or “24/7”, it is easy to overlook important details.

Common pitfalls when buying a dashcam

1. High resolution without suitable storage and light technology

A 4K dashcam theoretically records with a high level of detail. On its own, however, this does not guarantee that number plates will be clearly readable. The image sensor, lens aperture, compression and lighting conditions are also crucial. At night or in backlit conditions, footage can appear unclear despite the high pixel count.

Look for a specific resolution for both the front and rear cameras, as well as features such as HDR, WDR or a sensor from Sony’s STARVIS range. The right memory card is also important: a U3 or Class 10 microSD card is often recommended for high-resolution recording.

2. “24-hour parking mode” without a power supply

The term 24-hour parking mode does not automatically mean that the camera will record continuously without additional installation. Many models require a dashcam hardwire kit, which is connected directly to the fuse box. Without this accessory, parking mode may work only in a limited capacity or not at all.

A low-voltage cut-off and a fuse tap suitable for the vehicle are important here. These features are designed to prevent the starter battery from becoming excessively discharged. If you are unsure, the installation should be carried out by a qualified workshop, particularly when cables need to be routed near airbags.

3. Additional features with limited practical value

GPS, Wi-Fi, voice control, ADAS and 4G remote access can be useful. However, they often increase the price and may require an app, a separate module or an additional power supply. Before buying, check the following:

  • Is GPS integrated, or is it only available through an accessory module?
  • Does the Wi-Fi dashcam require a specific app?
  • Does voice control work in your preferred language?
  • Are ADAS warnings simply alerts rather than automatic driving safety features?
  • Is a separate 4G module and data plan required for cloud or remote access?

Technical parameters you should compare

Recording coverage: front, rear or all-round

A basic car camera with front recording is suitable for users who mainly want to document traffic in front of the vehicle. A front and rear dashcam also captures events behind the car, making it a sensible choice for commuters, families or high-mileage drivers.

Models with three or four channels can record the cabin as well as the left and right sides of the vehicle. This is particularly interesting for taxi and private-hire operators. At the same time, installation becomes more demanding, the amount of data increases and the requirements placed on the memory card are higher.

Image sensor and recording mode

According to the manufacturer, a dashcam with Sony STARVIS may use a light-sensitive sensor. For individual products, you should still examine the actual front and rear resolutions separately. For example, a camera may record in 4K at the front but only 1080p at the rear.

A dashcam with night vision may use HDR, WDR, larger apertures or infrared LEDs, depending on the model. Infrared is particularly relevant for recording inside the vehicle. For exterior recording, proper installation, an unobstructed view through the windscreen and correctly adjusted exposure remain essential.

Power supply and parking surveillance

For normal driving, many devices can simply be connected to the 12-volt socket. Parking surveillance typically uses one of three methods:

  1. Collision detection: The camera starts recording when an impact is detected.
  2. Motion detection: Recording begins when movement is detected.
  3. Time-lapse: Individual frames are captured at longer intervals to reduce storage requirements and energy consumption.

Check whether the required hardwire kit is included. The separately available Dashcam Hardwire Kit for 24-Hour Parking Surveillance lists models including the Z60, Z60 Pro, MINI2X, Z50 Pro and N2. The description refers, among other things, to voltage conversion from 12 V/2 A to 5 V/3 A, along with intelligent voltage monitoring.

Legal and practical information for Germany

Dashcam footage must not automatically be published permanently or without a specific reason. Check the requirements for short-term, event-triggered storage, automatic overwriting through loop recording and the handling of audio recordings. Depending on the situation, data protection and personal rights may be affected. Read the operating instructions and the manufacturer’s guidance, and use the camera in a way that does not obstruct the driver’s field of vision.

Before buying, you should also check:

  • Is the mount suitable for the windscreen, and does it leave all important areas unobstructed?
  • Is the cable long enough to reach the rear camera?
  • Is the memory card included?
  • Which fuse tap does the vehicle require?
  • Are the app, GPS or cloud services compatible with your smartphone?

Car dashcam FAQ

How is a dashcam connected in a car?

For normal recording, the camera is usually powered via a 12-volt charger. If a dashcam with parking surveillance is to operate when the ignition is switched off, a suitable hardwire kit for the fuse box is often required. Installation should be carried out professionally.

How long does a dashcam last?

Its service life depends on heat, vibration, the memory card, the power supply and the recording interval. Models with a supercapacitor are designed to close and save files safely. The memory card should be checked regularly and replaced if recording errors occur.

What are the ongoing running costs?

In addition to the purchase price, you may need to pay for a suitable microSD card, a hardwire kit and, for some dashcams with GPS and Wi-Fi, additional app or 4G services. Before placing your order, compare the package contents and any required accessories on the product page.
