Buying a children’s night light: what parents should look for in battery life, brightness and safety

A children’s night light should provide orientation at night without making the sleeping area unnecessarily bright. Parents also have additional requirements: the light should be readily available for feeding or changing, easy to operate and, ideally, not require a socket to remain permanently occupied. At the same time, some advertising claims sound more convincing than the technical specifications actually are.

Common buying misconceptions about children’s night lights

1. Long battery life does not apply to every brightness level

Claims such as “up to 100 hours” often refer to the lowest brightness setting. At full brightness, the operating time can be considerably shorter. So check whether the manufacturer states the battery life for several brightness levels. With a rechargeable night light, battery capacity, charging time and charging connection are also relevant points of comparison.

2. Colour changing does not replace properly adjustable brightness

A colour-changing night light can be decorative, but that does not automatically make it suitable for every situation. For feeding or changing during the night, a warm white, dimmed light is usually more practical than a constantly changing coloured light. What matters is whether the brightness can be adjusted independently of the colour mode and whether the light can still be operated directly on the device.

3. “Child-friendly” says little about how the product is actually used

A soft silicone casing can be comfortable to hold. However, an electrical device should not be left unattended in a baby’s cot or near water, heat sources or bedding. Look for specific information about the material, cleaning, charger and recommended age. A baby night light for a bedside table has different requirements from a portable model that an older child uses independently in the hallway.

Technical specifications you should check

Battery, charging connection and operating time

A night light with a rechargeable battery can be used flexibly because it does not need to remain connected to a socket. The following details are important for everyday use:

  • Battery capacity: This is usually stated in mAh. A higher capacity may provide a longer operating time, but on its own it does not indicate how long the light will actually stay on.
  • Charging time: For example, three hours of charging time and six hours of operation at maximum brightness are easier to assess than an unexplained claim of “long usage”.
  • Connection: A night light with USB-C charging can be used with many current cables. Even so, check whether the cable and compatible power source are listed as included.
  • Charging indicator: A coloured indicator can show whether the battery is charging or fully charged.

Brightness, colour temperature and controls

For a children’s sleep light, the maximum brightness is not the only consideration: the lowest setting and the control system are important too. A dimmable night light with three levels is easy to operate. Stepless dimming allows finer adjustments, but often requires a longer touch or several control actions.

A colour temperature of 3000 K is described as warm white. The Aigostar model also specifies 8 lumens and a power consumption of 0.4 W. Values like these help you assess the lighting objectively. The actual lighting effect also depends on the cover, beam angle and position in the room.

Touch controls are practical at night when they respond reliably. Check whether the manufacturer mentions a button lock, memory function or timer. A timer can prevent the light from staying on all night.

Casing, cleaning and safe positioning

Silicone, ABS, PP and polystyrene are different materials, each with its own characteristics. A soft silicone casing can improve grip, while a polycarbonate casing may be designed for durability. However, this does not constitute a general safety guarantee.

Place a children’s night light on a stable, dry surface. Chargers and cables should be kept out of reach of young children. Devices with a mains plug should not be used in damp rooms and should be fully inserted into the socket. Specifications such as IP44 refer to the device’s level of protection against splashing water and do not mean that it can be submerged.

How to use a children’s night light safely every day

Position the light so that it illuminates the area you need without shining directly into your child’s face. For breastfeeding or changing during the night, a warm white, dimmed light can be useful. A portable night light should be charged before bedtime if it will be needed outside the child’s bedroom during the night.

Clean electrical devices according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For many models, a soft, dry cloth is sufficient. The device must not be immersed in water. Also check the cable, charging socket and casing regularly for visible damage.

FAQ about children’s night lights

How much electricity does a children’s night light use?

Consumption depends on the power rating, brightness and operating time. The Aigostar night light is specified at 0.4 W. Battery-powered models do not draw power directly from a socket while in use; however, the battery must be charged regularly. A timer or low brightness setting can extend the usage time per charge.

How long does the battery of a rechargeable night light last?

This depends on the battery capacity and selected brightness. The VIVREAL A032 model states up to 6 hours at maximum brightness. The VAVA model specifies around 7 hours at full brightness and up to 100 hours at the lowest setting. These figures come from the manufacturer and should not be understood as general battery life for all operating modes.

Is a colour-changing night light suitable for babies?

Colour changing is a feature, but it is not essential. For babies and toddlers, parents should focus above all on a low brightness setting, simple controls and safe positioning. A timer can prevent the light from staying on continuously. If you are unsure, follow the age and safety information for the specific product.
