Christmas decorations should look festive, be safe to use and be easy to store compactly once the season is over. In practice, however, unclear product details, unsuitable power supplies or incorrect placement often lead to disappointing purchases. This applies to Christmas lights, tree decorations and decorative figures, as well as themed items for Chinese New Year.
Outdoor string lights need more than an attractive appearance. Look for a stated IP protection rating. IP65, for example, means protection against dust and water jets, but not automatically against permanent immersion. With solar products, only the light source or string lights may be protected, while the solar panel must not be submerged in water.
If there is no clear indication that a product is suitable for outdoor use, it should only be used indoors. Battery-operated LED string lights for indoor spaces are not automatically suitable for balconies, patios or gardens.
