Christmas decorations should complement your existing décor, be safe to use, and last longer than a single season. However, products vary significantly in material, size, power supply and intended use – from tree ornaments and ribbon decorations to Christmas lighting. If you choose purely by colour or a low price, you can easily overlook important details.
Three points in particular often lead to disappointing purchases:
For decorations made of plastic, fabric or artificial plants, it is also worth checking the care and safety instructions. Artificial branches and dried-looking decorations should not be placed near candles, heaters or open flames. Small parts should be kept out of reach of young children.
For living rooms, hallways or dry party spaces, decorations without a special outdoor rating are usually sufficient. For balconies, patios, fences or gardens, however, material and protection specifications are crucial.
For electrical Christmas lighting, the IP rating should be stated. IP44 is suitable for areas where splashing water may occur. Connections must still be protected from standing water. When installing outdoors, it is advisable to follow the manufacturer's operating and safety instructions, and to disconnect the lighting from the mains or batteries when not in use.
A light chain that is 15 metres long covers a larger area than a short tree garland. The LED spacing affects how evenly the points of light are distributed. With the M.TK light chain described, the 150 LEDs are spaced approximately 10 centimetres apart.
The operating mode is also important: constant light, flashing or flickering modes create different effects. Battery operation offers flexibility without needing a socket, but incurs ongoing costs for replacement batteries. If batteries are not included, this additional expense must be factored into your buying decision.
Tree ornaments such as angel decorations or stars should have a sturdy hanging loop. For ribbon decorations, the width, shape retention and the ability to attach them to a door, wall, tree or car are relevant. Artificial flowers with bendable wire stems can be adapted to vases and arrangements, but need to be kept away from heat sources.
For seasonal use, storing decorations in a dry, dust-free place makes sense. Electrical products should be completely dry before being put away. Fabric decorations should be packed loosely so they do not become permanently creased.

For the Christmas tree, you can combine ornaments, bows and stars using a simple colour scheme. Two or three shades usually look more cohesive than lots of different motifs. On doors and windows, make sure the weight of the decoration matches the fixing method. Adhesive strips, hooks or ribbons should not damage delicate surfaces.
Outdoors, decorations should be positioned so they do not block walkways or create loose parts in the wind. An LED firework lamp or star light chain can serve as a focal point, but should be mounted with sufficient distance from flammable materials. For party decorations and seasonal events, length, reach and battery consumption are more important than a particularly fancy product name.
We have put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the safety regulations in force in the EU.
For the garden, a light chain should be explicitly designed for outdoor use and have a specific IP rating. IP44 protects against splashing water, not against standing water. Power supplies and connections must be kept dry and protected.
The actual lifespan depends on product quality, operating time, batteries and storage. LEDs generally produce less heat during operation than traditional bulbs. Nevertheless, light chains should be stored in a dry place, free from kinks and away from heat sources.
That depends on the operating time, battery type and frequency of use. Buying a battery-operated LED light chain can be practical if you do not have a socket nearby. However, the ongoing cost of batteries and their replacement must be included in the overall calculation. For larger areas, you should also check whether the stated length is actually sufficient.
