Buying a contact grill: a guide to choosing one for paninis, steaks and quick meals

A contact grill can take a lot of work off your hands in small kitchens, single-person households and family homes: sandwiches, paninis, vegetables, burgers and meat can all be prepared on a heated surface, without needing a large cooker or outdoor space. However, appliances vary considerably in terms of features, operation and cleaning.

Before buying, you should pay particular attention to three common pitfalls:

  • High wattage without a suitable grilling surface: Powerful heating alone does not guarantee even cooking. The plate material, temperature control and size of the usable surface are also important.
  • “Multi-function” with limited everyday practicality: A 3-in-1 contact grill can take on several tasks. However, if the plates cannot be changed or are difficult to clean, its versatility goes unused.
  • Non-stick coating as a promise of easy care: A contact grill with a non-stick coating is usually easier to clean. However, abrasive sponges, metal utensils and excessively high temperatures can damage the surface. Removable, dishwasher-safe grill plates are more practical for everyday use than permanently fitted surfaces.

Which contact grill features matter

1. A grilling surface and design to suit your household

For one or two people, a compact electric contact grill with a grilling surface of around 22 × 14 cm is often sufficient. These appliances can usually be stored upright and are particularly suitable for toasties, sandwiches and individual paninis.

If you want to prepare several portions at the same time, you should consider larger dimensions. Surfaces of around 29 × 23 cm or more provide extra room for burgers, vegetables or several sandwiches. A model that opens fully flat can also be used as a tabletop grill or flat electric grill indoors. Make sure you have enough space on your worktop.

You should also look for:

  • Height-adjustable upper plate: useful for thick paninis, burgers or food of different heights.
  • Grease drainage and drip tray: helps reduce mess around the appliance.
  • Vertical storage: useful in small kitchens.
  • Non-slip feet and a heat-resistant surface: essential basics for safe operation.

2. Temperature control rather than just a ready indicator

A basic appliance with a fixed temperature may be sufficient for toasties and thin sandwiches. However, an electric grill for steaks and paninis is more flexible with an adjustable temperature. A contact grill with temperature control allows you to adapt the heat to the thickness and type of food.

Depending on the model, you may have rotary controls, several power settings or digital controls. Appliances with separately adjustable upper and lower heat offer particularly extensive control. This feature is especially appealing for frequent use, but usually comes with a larger housing and a higher purchase price.

A timer can help you keep an eye on the cooking time. However, it does not replace monitoring the food while grilling. Many appliances do not switch off automatically or offer fully automatic cooking programmes. Temperature ranges should therefore always be understood as a technical specification of the appliance, not a guarantee of a particular cooking result.

3. Cleaning, plates and coating

A grill with removable plates makes cleaning considerably easier. If the grill plates are dishwasher-safe, the cleaning effort can be reduced further. The appliance body must never be immersed in water; wipe it with a slightly damp cloth instead.

For a non-stick coating, we recommend:

  1. Allow the appliance to cool completely and unplug it from the mains.
  2. Do not use metal spatulas or sharp-edged utensils.
  3. Do not use aggressive cleaning products or scouring pads.
  4. Remove grease and batter residue promptly.
  5. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding dishwasher use.

In retail, the term health grill generally describes a design with contact surfaces and grease drainage. It is not a medical term and does not constitute a health claim. Whether oil or butter is needed during preparation depends on the food and the recipe.

Frequently asked questions about contact grills

How many watts should a contact grill have?

For toasties and simple sandwiches, 750 to 1,000 W may be sufficient. Models from around 1,600 W upwards are intended for larger grilling surfaces and frequent preparation of meat or several portions. Wattage indicates the appliance’s electrical power consumption, not automatically the quality of the grilling result.

What is the correct way to clean a contact grill?

After use, unplug the appliance and wait until it has cooled completely. Depending on the manufacturer’s instructions, removable plates and drip trays may be placed in the dishwasher. Permanently fitted surfaces should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Water must not get into the housing or come into contact with the cable or plug.

How long does a contact grill last?

The service life depends on how often it is used, how it is cleaned and stored, and how the coating is treated. Keeping the appliance stable, using suitable kitchen utensils and following the operating instructions will help protect its components. Before buying, also check the warranty terms, availability of spare parts and information on permitted use.
