Buying a cookware set: materials, hob types and choosing the right option for everyday use

A cookware set can quickly complete your kitchen equipment. However, larger sets are not automatically more economical: individual pieces may often go unused, lids may not fit several pans or pots, or the coating may require more care than expected. Claims such as “suitable for all hob types” should also be checked against the technical product details before you buy.

Common pitfalls when buying a cookware set

1. Lots of pieces, but little practical benefit

A pan set with numerous kitchen accessories may seem comprehensive. What matters, however, is whether the sizes suit your household. One person will often only need a small saucepan, a medium-sized frying pan and a pot holding around 3 to 5 litres. Families are more likely to need a larger stockpot and a frying pan with a sufficiently large cooking surface.

2. Unclear coating information

“Non-stick” initially describes only the function, not the precise material or care requirements. For coated cookware, information should be provided about the type of coating, maximum temperature and suitable kitchen utensils. Metal turners can damage delicate surfaces. With ceramic coatings, you should also check whether the coating applies to the inside or only the outside.

3. Hob compatibility is interpreted too broadly

Induction-compatible cookware requires a magnetic, flat base that sits evenly on the hob. A set may be approved for induction, yet individual pieces can still differ in heat performance or base stability. Oven suitability should also be considered separately: removable handles, lids and silicone parts often have different temperature limits from the body of the pot or pan.

Parameters to check before buying

Material: stainless steel, aluminium or cast iron

Stainless steel cookware is resistant to acidic foods and is suitable for soups, sauces and everyday cooking. Multi-layer constructions with an aluminium core can distribute heat more evenly. Stainless steel usually requires careful temperature and fat control when cooking delicate foods, as it does not have a traditional non-stick effect.

Aluminium sets are often lighter. Combined with a coating, they provide a smooth cooking surface and are suitable for gentle frying. With coated cookware, low to medium temperatures and soft kitchen utensils should be preferred.

Painted or enamelled cast iron retains heat for a long time and is well suited to slow-cooked dishes. However, it is considerably heavier. Before buying, you should therefore compare the weight of the set and its individual pieces with your available storage space.

Coating and cleaning

A ceramic coating can provide a smooth surface. According to the relevant manufacturer’s product information, temperature limits, dishwasher suitability and suitable utensils are key considerations. “Dishwasher-safe cookware” does not necessarily mean that accessories such as handles, lids or seals can also go in the dishwasher.

For a non-stick frying pan, we recommend:

  • not heating it empty for a long time,
  • avoiding sharp-edged or metal kitchen utensils,
  • cleaning it with a soft sponge and mild washing-up liquid,
  • allowing it to cool completely before washing,
  • storing it dry and in a space-saving manner, ideally with pan protectors.

Capacity and diameter

These sizes are often practical for everyday households:

  • 16 to 18 cm: milk, sauces and small portions,
  • 20 cm: side dishes, smaller meals and around 2 to 3 litres,
  • 24 to 26 cm: family portions and versatile slow-cooked dishes,
  • 28 cm frying pan: frying, pan dishes and larger quantities,
  • 5 to 8 litres: soups, pasta or batch cooking.

The stated capacities should be compared with the actual usable volume. For safety and ease of handling, a 6-litre pot will not be filled right to the rim.

Individual additions instead of a complete set

Not every household needs a complete cookware set. A single 26 cm frying pan, a 20 cm stockpot or a small saucepan may be more useful than an unused piece from a set. For Asian dishes, a bamboo steamer is a practical option. According to the product information, the two-tier bamboo steamer with a diameter of 20 cm is suitable for dim sum, bao buns, vegetables and rice.

If you are specifically looking for Tefal cookware, the Tefal Comfort Max starter set is an 11-piece stainless steel set. It includes two pots with glass lids, a casserole, a 28 cm frying pan and kitchen utensils. According to the product information, it is suitable for all hob types, including induction, and oven-safe up to 175 °C, excluding the glass lid.

FAQ about cookware sets

Which cookware is suitable for induction?

Look for the clear induction-compatible designation and a flat base that sits evenly on the hob. With sets, this information should apply to every relevant cooking vessel, not just the frying pan or largest pot.

How long does coated cookware last?

Its service life depends on temperature, utensils, cleaning and storage. Low to medium heat, soft kitchen utensils and hand washing can help protect the surface. The vessel should be replaced if you notice visible scratches, flaking or reduced performance.

Is dishwasher-safe cookware always easy to care for?

No. The term may apply only to the pots and pans. Removable handles, glass lids, seals and accessories may require different cleaning methods. The specific care instructions for the product in question are therefore essential before buying.
