Buying cookware: How to find the right frying pans, saucepans and kitchen appliances

By: Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer

Whether you are furnishing a new flat, setting up a family kitchen, preparing camping equipment or replacing a warped frying pan, price is not the only factor to consider when buying cookware. Material, hob compatibility, size and safe handling are all important. Product descriptions often contain numerous technical terms, but their relevance in everyday use can vary considerably.

Common pitfalls when buying cookware

1. “Suitable for all hob types” without checking the base

A frying pan may be described as suitable for gas, electric, ceramic and induction hobs. Even so, you should check the specific manufacturer’s information. An induction frying pan requires a magnetic base that sits flat on the hob. An uneven or undersized base can reduce heat transfer.

The same applies to saucepan sets: not every accessory will automatically have the same suitability. Check the information for each individual saucepan and frying pan.

2. Large sets containing pieces you will rarely use

An 11-piece saucepan set can be useful for a larger household. However, for one person or a small kitchen, many of the pieces may simply take up valuable storage space. Before buying, it is worth taking a quick inventory:

  • Will you use a large soup pot regularly?
  • Is a 28-cm frying pan suitable for the size of your household?
  • Do you already have kitchen tools such as a whisk, ladle or spatula?
  • Can the lids be stored without taking up too much space?

A single, well-chosen piece of cookware can be more economical than an extensive set containing unused accessories.

3. Coatings and care instructions are overlooked

A coated wok pan is not automatically designed for high temperatures or metal utensils. For example, the ZWILLING Joy Plus wok recommends using wooden, silicone or plastic utensils, as well as washing it by hand. If you are looking for a dishwasher-safe stainless steel frying pan, check the specific care instructions rather than drawing conclusions from the material alone.

Parameters to decide on before buying

Material and construction

Multi-layer constructions combine different properties. In a Tri-Ply frying pan made from 304 stainless steel, an aluminium core sits between layers of stainless steel. Aluminium conducts heat well, while stainless steel provides a robust, corrosion-resistant outer surface. According to the product description, the PURECOOK Tri-Ply frying pans are suitable for gas, induction, ceramic and halogen hobs.

The material designation is also important: 18/10 stainless steel nominally contains 18 per cent chromium and 10 per cent nickel. This describes the composition, but it does not replace checking the base thickness, handle attachment and care instructions.

Diameter, capacity and weight

The diameter must match the cooking zone. A 28-cm frying pan offers a generous cooking surface, but requires enough storage space and a suitably sized hob zone. For soups, stews or larger portions, capacity and pan height are more important than diameter alone.

A pressure cooker with a 4-litre capacity is more suitable for smaller portions, while 6 litres offers more flexibility for family meals. With pressure cookers, a functioning safety system, clear instructions and compliance with the stated fill levels are particularly important.

Hob compatibility and temperature limits

With an electric hob or a single hot plate, infinitely adjustable temperature control and a stable base are important. According to the product details, the Clatronic EKP 3582 has 1,500 watts, an infinitely adjustable thermostat, an indicator light, overheat protection and a hot plate measuring approximately 180 mm in diameter.

For oven use, the permitted temperature should be checked separately. The stated oven temperature for the Tefal Comfort Max Starterset is up to 175 °C, excluding the glass lid. Restrictions like these help prevent damage to the lid or handles.

Practical safety tips for the kitchen and camping

  • Always place cookware centrally on the cooking zone and position handles so that they do not extend beyond the work surface.
  • Never leave pressure cookers unattended while pressure is building, and only open the lid once the pressure has been fully released.
  • A firelighter pack containing 32 paraffin cubes should only be used as instructed by the manufacturer, with suitable fire pits, barbecues or ovens. Keep out of reach of children, store in a dry place and do not inhale the vapours.
  • A children’s kitchen is a toy and not a substitute for a working hob. The Theo Klein Miele Family Kitchen contains small parts and is intended for children aged three and over, with supervision.
  • Electrical appliances such as camping hot plates and electric hobs require a suitable power supply. Damaged cables or plugs must not be used.

Frequently asked questions about cookware

Which cookware is suitable for induction?

Look for the clear designation “induction-compatible” and a magnetic, flat base. With sets, this information should apply to each individual saucepan and frying pan. A magnet test can provide an initial indication, but it does not replace the manufacturer’s information.

How long does stainless steel cookware last?

Its service life depends on the material thickness, base construction, handle connections, temperature changes and care. Stainless steel is generally robust, but should not be overheated when empty and should be dried thoroughly after cleaning. With coated frying pans, using suitable utensils and keeping to the recommended temperature are essential.

Does a single hot plate use a lot of electricity?

Consumption depends on the power rating, heating time and thermostat control. A 1,500-watt hot plate theoretically uses 1.5 kWh per hour of operation at full power. In practice, the thermostat switches the heater on and off depending on the selected temperature.
