Drinking glasses with handles combine the visual appeal of glass with a more secure grip. Depending on the design, they are suitable for coffee, tea, cold drinks, beer or carrying in a backpack. The selection ranges from simple handled glass cups and double-walled glasses to insulated stainless-steel models with lids.
However, the product description alone is not always enough to make the right purchasing decision. Capacity, material, closure and cleaning requirements can vary considerably. Anyone who focuses solely on an attractive design or terms such as “leakproof” may end up buying a vessel that is unsuitable for its intended use.
Double-walled glasses consist of two layers of glass separated by a gap. This can help the outer surface remain more comfortable to hold when filled with hot or cold drinks. The glass is still fragile, however. Borosilicate glass products are not indestructible either and should be protected from impacts and sudden temperature changes.
Extra caution is required with soda-lime glass: A handled beer glass is generally designed for cold drinks and is not suitable for boiling water or microwave use.
A lid with a seal can reduce leakage during transport. The result depends on whether the seal is positioned correctly and the closure is fully secured. Carbonated drinks, dry ice or very hot liquids can create pressure inside the vessel and are expressly unsuitable for many models.
For commuting to the office or travelling by train, handled travel mugs or a stainless-steel to-go cup are therefore often more practical than an open glass cup. If you are considering a leakproof water bottle, also check whether it is intended only for water and cold drinks.
The term “dishwasher-safe glasses” applies to the specific product and the conditions stated by the manufacturer. Wooden lids, seals and delicate surfaces may require separate cleaning. A stainless-steel tumbler, for example, may be approved for hand washing only, even if the body appears particularly easy to maintain.
For espresso or smaller coffee drinks, 200 to 250 ml may be sufficient. A capacity of 350 ml is more suitable for lattes, cappuccinos, tea or larger cold drinks. For iced tea, smoothies and lemonade, larger handled drinking glasses from around 500 ml are a good choice.
Also pay attention to the diameter and height. A 475 ml tumbler measuring approximately 7.3 cm in diameter and 20.7 cm in height will not automatically fit every cup holder. For commuters, these dimensions are more important than the volume alone.
Borosilicate glass is suitable for many hot and cold drinks and is valued for its resistance to thermal shock. Nevertheless, extreme temperature changes should be avoided, such as pouring cold liquid into a glass that has been heated considerably.
Stainless steel with double-wall vacuum insulation is less prone to breakage than glass when used on the go. In the LocknLock models, the inner wall is made of 316 stainless steel and the outer wall of 304 stainless steel. According to the product specifications, they are intended for coffee, tea and water. The models must not be used in a microwave or oven and must not be cleaned in a dishwasher.
A firmly integrated handle makes the vessel easier to grip, but it does not replace a stable base. A non-slip bottom can provide additional stability on desks or kitchen tables. For lids, a well-fitting silicone seal and a clear, accessible cleaning path are essential.
Check the following before buying:
Why it’s a good fit: Two double-walled handled glasses for coffee, tea and cold drinks at home or in the office.
The product specifications mention borosilicate glass, a double-wall construction and dishwasher suitability. Even so, sudden temperature changes should still be avoided.
250 ml capacity, two glasses per set, handles and dishwasher suitability according to the product description.
Why it’s a good fit: For the office, train and car when you need a handle, a screw-top closure and temperature insulation.
According to the specifications, the tumbler is not dishwasher-safe and is not designed for carbonated drinks. These limitations should be taken into account before buying.
475 ml capacity, double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel, integrated handle and two-way lid with a narrow drinking opening and a wide cleaning opening.
Why it’s a good fit: For iced tea, lemonade, smoothies and iced coffee at garden gatherings, parties or at home.
According to the specifications, this set is intended exclusively for cold drinks. The wooden lid must be cleaned by hand and must not be soaked.
Two 750 ml glasses, handles, glass straws and wooden lids with rubber seals. Not designed for microwave use or hot liquids.
Why it’s a good fit: A glass set for guests, barbecues and serving classic beer portions.
The set is made from thick-walled soda-lime glass and is not suitable for hot drinks, microwave use or oven use. Sudden temperature changes should be avoided.
Four handled glasses with a capacity of 320 ml each; suitable for the dishwasher according to the product specifications.
We have put together a current selection of products that can be compared by capacity, material, handle design and intended use.
That depends on the material and the product’s specific approval. Double-walled borosilicate glass products and many coffee glasses are designed for hot drinks. A handled beer glass made from soda-lime glass or a cold-drink glass with a wooden lid, on the other hand, may be explicitly suitable only for cold liquids.
Glass is well suited to desks and homes, offers a clear view of the drink and, in certain designs, is dishwasher-safe. A handled stainless-steel tumbler is generally more practical for transport when you need a screw-top closure and vacuum insulation. Cleaning may be more involved, however, if hand washing is the only permitted method.
Service life depends on the material, care and exposure to impacts. Glass should not collide with hard objects in the dishwasher and should be replaced if visible damage appears. For tumblers, the seals and lids are the components most likely to wear out. Regular cleaning and dry storage can help preserve their usability.
