Buying an Electric Grill: A Guide to Choosing the Right Model for Your Balcony, Kitchen or Patio

An electric grill can be used all year round, takes up little space and does not require charcoal. However, not every model will be the right choice. Some appliances are advertised as high-powered but have a small grilling surface or only limited temperature control. Others appear easy to maintain, even though the grill plates and drip tray cannot be removed.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I provide an objective assessment of the most important product details. The key is not a single marketing claim, but the combination of intended use, grilling surface, temperature control, cleaning and energy consumption.

Common pitfalls when buying an electric grill

1. Do not confuse wattage with grilling performance

A high wattage generally speeds up preheating, but on its own it says little about how the appliance will perform in practice. The design, heating elements and heat distribution also affect the results. A compact table grill with 2,000 watts may be sufficient for two people, while families will need a larger grilling surface and heat distribution that is as even as possible.

2. ‘Non-stick’ does not automatically mean easy to clean

A coated grill plate can help prevent food from sticking. However, several other factors affect how much maintenance is required:

  • Are the plates removable?
  • Does the manufacturer state that they are dishwasher-safe?
  • Is there a separate drip tray?
  • May the coating only be cleaned with soft utensils?

With permanently fitted plates, you are often limited to carefully wiping them clean. After several grilling sessions, this can take more time than expected.

3. Do not treat indoor and outdoor grills as the same

An electric grill for indoor use should only be used in dry, well-ventilated areas and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. A BBQ grill for the balcony must also comply with local fire-safety regulations and the rules of your building or tenancy agreement. A gas appliance such as the Integrill 800° Gas Steak Grill is expressly intended for outdoor use only. A 800-degree gas grill is therefore not a substitute for an indoor grill.

Parameters to check before buying

Grilling surface and design

A compact indoor grill or contact grill is often sufficient for individual portions. If you are cooking for several people, compare the usable grilling surface in centimetres or square centimetres. An appliance with a hinged top can be used as a table grill or an open grill plate, giving you greater flexibility.

A contact grill is suitable for sandwiches, panini, meat and vegetables. An open table grill is more practical when several people want to grill at the table at the same time. Models that can be stored upright or have a foldable design are worth considering if storage space is limited.

Temperature control and heating zones

Stepless or digital temperature control makes it easier to adjust the heat for different foods. Appliances with separately adjustable upper and lower heating are particularly versatile. Also check the temperature range: vegetables and sandwiches have different requirements from foods that need high-heat searing.

Some appliances use fixed temperature settings. This can simplify operation, but it limits how precisely you can adjust the heat. A steak grill designed for high temperatures is not automatically suitable for delicate foods.

Cleaning, materials and safety

Look for:

  • Removable grill plates and a detachable drip tray
  • Clear care instructions for the non-stick coating
  • Heat-resistant handles and a stable base
  • A suitable 220–240 volt power supply for household appliances
  • Sufficient clearance from curtains, paper and other flammable materials

Cast-iron grill plates retain heat well, but they are also heavy. An enamelled grill plate should not be cooled suddenly with cold water while it is still hot. Information about materials that come into contact with food should be clearly set out in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Frequently asked questions about electric grills

Can you use an electric grill indoors?

Many electric grills are designed for indoor use, but they should be placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface with sufficient ventilation. Always follow the instructions for use. Appliances intended for outdoor use only, particularly gas grills, must not be used indoors.

How much electricity does an electric grill use?

Consumption depends on the power rating and the actual operating time. A 2,000-watt appliance theoretically uses 2 kilowatt hours when running at full power for one hour. In practice, the heating element often does not continue operating at full power once the appliance has preheated. For a realistic estimate, multiply the rated power in kilowatts by the usage time and your current electricity tariff.

How long does an electric grill last?

Its service life depends on how it is used, cleaned, coated and stored. A removable grill plate is easier to maintain and, with some models, can be replaced separately. Overheating, metal utensils, harsh cleaning products and moisture affecting electrical components can shorten the appliance’s service life. Before buying, check the care instructions, spare-parts information and warranty terms.
