Buying an Electric Motorbike for Children: What Parents Should Look for in the Battery, Safety and Off-Road Capability

Depending on its design, a children’s electric motorbike can be a simple ride-on vehicle for toddlers or a powerful off-road model for older children. These differences are a common source of poor buying decisions. A high wattage alone says little about whether an electric motorbike for children is suitable for their age, height and intended riding terrain.

Before choosing a model, parents should therefore look out for three common marketing traps:

  • Top speed without a suitable learning mode: A model reaching 30 or 35 km/h is not automatically suitable for beginners. What matters is having several speed settings, an easily accessible brake and predictable throttle response.
  • Range figures without clear test conditions: Claims such as “up to 80 minutes” or a specific number of kilometres depend on the rider’s weight, surface, temperature, gradients and riding mode. For planning purposes, the manufacturer’s figure should be treated as a guideline.
  • Off-road styling without genuine off-road equipment: Wide tyres alone do not make a dirt bike. Suspension, ground clearance, braking system, frame material and the sealing of electrical components are also important.

The key technical criteria when choosing an electric motorbike for children

1. Age, height and riding position

The stated age range is only a starting point. More important factors include seat height, handlebar width, vehicle weight and maximum load. When stationary, the child should be able to maintain a stable posture and reach the controls without stretching their arms.

For children aged around 3 and over, slower electric ride-on vehicles for children with three wheels or stabilisers are often suitable. This design makes getting on and off easier and is generally intended for paved, private areas. A genuine electric children’s motocross bike with 14-, 18- or 20-inch wheels, on the other hand, is intended for taller children with sufficient coordination and riding experience.

Check the following before buying:

  • the child’s seat height and inside-leg measurement
  • permitted rider weight
  • vehicle weight in relation to the child’s physical strength
  • reach of the brake levers and throttle grip
  • room for a helmet, gloves and sturdy footwear

2. Motor power, speed and riding modes

A 500W electric motorbike can already deliver a distinctly sporty riding experience. The RFN EVO RACING 18, for example, is specified with three settings of 15, 22 and 30 km/h. This allows the bike to be adapted gradually to the rider’s ability and the terrain.

According to the product details, the 750W children’s electric motorbike RFN EVO RACING 20 also offers three settings: 15, 25 and 35 km/h. Its higher rated output of 750 W and larger 20-inch wheel make it more suitable for taller, more experienced children. However, maximum speed should not be the only factor when choosing a model. For beginners, a low speed limit is more important than the potential top speed.

Even an electric children’s dirt bike with 350 W can benefit from multiple riding modes. The 14-inch RFN Warrior Kids SX-E350 model lists three settings of 15, 22 and 30 km/h, as well as a parental speed lock. Functions like these can help prevent a child from accidentally switching to a higher mode while riding.

3. Battery, range and charging

When choosing a battery-powered children’s motorbike, voltage, capacity and charger should be considered together. A 36-volt system with 5 Ah equates to approximately 180 Wh. The RFN EVO RACING 18 specifies 36 V, 5 Ah and 180 Wh; the RFN EVO RACING 20 is listed with 36 V, 7.5 Ah and 270 Wh.

A higher watt-hour capacity can provide more riding time under comparable conditions. However, tyre tread, rider weight, gradients and riding mode all make a difference. Figures such as a 15 km range, 18 km range, 39 km range or up to 80 minutes should therefore not be treated as guaranteed everyday performance.

Useful features include:

  • removable batteries for charging outside the vehicle
  • overcharge, over-discharge and short-circuit protection
  • a charger with clear, verifiable technical specifications
  • replacement battery options and readily available spare parts
  • dry, frost-free battery storage

A stated protection rating such as IP54, IP65 or IP66 applies to specific components and is not a substitute for following the care instructions. After riding through mud, the vehicle should be cleaned and allowed to dry completely. The children’s off-road electric motorbike should not be used in deep water unless this is expressly permitted in the instructions.

Use in Germany: location and protective clothing

A battery-powered children’s motorbike is not automatically approved for public roads, cycle paths or pavements. Parents should check the instruction manual, labelling and applicable local requirements. Many models are suitable only for enclosed private land. Proper instruction, direct supervision and a traffic-free, obstacle-free practice area are also essential.

The basic equipment should include:

  • a correctly fitted cycle or motorbike helmet
  • gloves with a closed wrist
  • sturdy, closed-toe footwear
  • knee and elbow protection
  • long trousers and long-sleeved clothing

The description “for boys and girls” does not change the technical selection criteria. Height, weight, experience and riding environment are what matter.

Frequently asked questions about electric motorbikes for children

What age is an electric motorbike suitable for children?

This depends on the design and the manufacturer’s specifications. Three-wheeled ride-on models are sometimes offered for children aged 3 and over. Larger off-road models with 14-, 18- or 20-inch wheels require greater height, strength and coordination. The stated age range should always be considered alongside seat height, load limit and riding experience.

How long does the battery of a children’s electric motorbike last?

Runtime depends on battery capacity, riding mode, rider weight, surface and temperature. A 36 V battery with 5 Ah provides 180 Wh in theory, while a 36 V battery with 7.5 Ah provides 270 Wh. Manufacturer figures such as 18 or 39 kilometres are guidelines and may vary considerably when riding off-road.

What are the running costs?

The electricity cost per charge is usually manageable. Replacement batteries, tyres, brake components and charging accessories may have a greater impact. It is therefore worth checking the availability of spare parts, charging time and whether the battery can be replaced before buying.
