Buying an electric grill: What really matters with power output, cooking surface and cleaning

An electric grill can be a practical alternative to charcoal and gas units on the balcony, terrace or in the kitchen. It needs neither charcoal nor a gas bottle and is ready to use shortly after plugging in. Even so, high wattage, shiny coatings and bold product claims don’t automatically add up to the right model.

Before you buy, consider where you’ll use the grill, how many people you’ll regularly cook for, and how much cleaning you’re happy to take on.

Common buying mistakes with electric grills

1. Assuming more watts automatically means better grilling performance

A 2000-watt grill or a model rated at 3000 watts can heat up quickly. However, wattage alone says little about how evenly the heat is distributed or how large the truly usable cooking surface is. The design, the material of the grill plate and the temperature control also influence the result.

Also look for:

  • the usable cooking surface in centimetres or square centimetres,
  • a clear, comprehensible temperature control,
  • separate heating zones on contact grills,
  • suitability for the number of people you have in mind.

2. ‘Non-stick’ doesn’t automatically mean easy to clean

A non-stick grill plate can make it easier to release food, but it’s no substitute for thoughtful design. Fixed plates, hard-to-reach corners or the absence of a drip tray all increase cleaning effort.

Removable plates, a detachable drip tray and—where the manufacturer specifies—dishwasher-safe parts are practical. Don’t use metal utensils or abrasive cleaners on coated surfaces.

3. Confusing indoor and outdoor use

Not every electric grill is suitable for outdoor use. With a unit designed for both indoors and outdoors, you must observe placement, moisture protection and the user manual. On balconies, the house rules and, where applicable, your tenancy agreement or local requirements also apply. Even a low-smoke indoor grill should only be used on a stable, heat-resistant surface with sufficient space around it, away from combustible materials.

The key technical details to check before you buy

Cooking surface and design

A compact table-top grill fits smaller kitchens and is easier to store after use. For several people, don’t skimp on the cooking surface. A contact grill works with an upper and lower plate and is suitable for sandwiches, vegetables and thinner cuts. Open the unit 180 degrees to create a larger, open cooking surface.

A grill plate without a lid, by contrast, offers more room for ingredients of different thicknesses. A raclette grill is especially geared towards shared meals with several people, but won’t necessarily replace a classic electric grill for larger cuts of meat.

Temperature control and heating system

A grill with a thermostat allows more precise adjustment for meat, fish, vegetables or bread. A rotary dial is easy to use; digital controls can add extra features such as a timer or separate temperature zones.

With the Adler AD 3059, the upper and lower plates can, according to the product description, be set independently between 60 and 230 °C. The Tefal SuperGrill uses a thermostat with four positions. The Severin PG 8556 features temperature-controlled heating and a cooking surface of 37 × 29 cm.

Cleaning, fat drainage and safety

A removable drip tray collects fat and cooking juices. With some appliances, you can fill a dedicated tray with water to reduce smoke and prevent fat from burning. The appliance itself, cable and plug must not be immersed in water.

Also check:

  • Is the grill plate removable?
  • Are the parts dishwasher-safe according to the manufacturer?
  • Are there heat-resistant handles?
  • Does the appliance stand securely?
  • Is the cable length sufficient for the intended location?
  • Are user manual, manufacturer information and electrical markings included?

For electrical appliances in Germany, a suitable, earthed socket is important. Multi-socket adaptors and unsuitable extension leads can overload circuits. The specific manufacturer’s safety instructions take precedence.

Assess electricity consumption and running costs realistically

Running costs depend on power, usage time and your tariff. The simple calculation is:

Power in kilowatts × operating time in hours × electricity price per kilowatt hour = electricity costs

A unit with 2000 W equals 2 kW. If it runs for half an hour at full rated output, that theoretically amounts to 1 kWh. In practice, a thermostat switches the heating off intermittently once the target temperature is reached. Actual consumption can therefore be lower. For a realistic assessment, include pre-heating and re-heating.

Electric grill FAQ

Can you use an electric grill on the balcony?

That depends on the appliance, its user manual and the rules in your tenancy agreement or house regulations. Use the grill only on a stable, heat-resistant surface, keep clear of combustible items and avoid rain or standing water. If in doubt, ask your building management.

Which electric grill is suitable for indoors?

For indoor use, compact contact grills and table-top appliances expressly designed for it are appropriate. A removable drip tray, low smoke development and easy-clean plates are practical criteria. Ventilate while grilling and do not leave the appliance unattended.

How long does an electric grill last?

Service life depends on how often you use it, how it’s stored and cleaned, and the condition of the cable, thermostat and coating. Let the appliance cool down completely before cleaning, and store an outdoor grill somewhere dry. If the cable is damaged, there are cracks, or you notice unusual smoke or odours, stop using the appliance.
