Anyone looking to buy electronics and household appliances online will find a wide range of processors, televisions, memory cards, accessories and washing machines. Product pages include plenty of technical data, but not every specification is important for your intended use. At the same time, key limitations can easily be overlooked.
This buying guide explains which details you should check before buying, which common marketing traps to watch out for and which product types suit different user profiles.
A high speed sounds convincing, but it often only applies under specific conditions. For example, a microSD Express memory card can achieve read speeds of up to 900 MB/s only when used with a compatible microSD Express device and a suitable card reader. In older UHS-I devices, the card operates at the speeds supported by those devices.
The same applies to an AMD Ryzen processor: the socket, BIOS version, RAM, cooler and power supply must all be compatible with the CPU. A powerful chip alone therefore does not guarantee a suitable complete PC.
Terms such as “AI”, “Gaming” or “4K” reveal little about how suitable a product will be for everyday use. When choosing a television, factors such as panel technology, native refresh rate, HDR formats, connections and dimensions all matter. A 4K television also requires suitable content and an appropriate viewing distance for the higher resolution to make a meaningful difference.
For household appliances, the energy label is particularly important. Washing and drying modes may have different efficiency classes, so the figures should be considered separately.
A Bluetooth adapter may be optimised for specific devices and software environments. That does not automatically mean that every piece of Bluetooth hardware will be supported. An ergonomic Bluetooth keyboard may also require a particular operating system or a specific keyboard layout.

With a washer dryer, washing capacity and drying capacity should be considered separately.
