A floor lamp can serve as your main light source, a reading light or a decorative feature. Yet product images and general marketing claims don’t always help you make the right choice. What really matters are specific details such as the fitting, maximum wattage, base size, cable length and material.
A floor lamp that stands 150 to 180 cm tall can look compact in a shop or on product photos. In smaller rooms, though, it’s not just the height you need to consider. The diameter of the shade, the reach of an arc lamp and the size of the base all have to suit the space where you plan to place it.
So, measure before you buy:
A decorative floor lamp with a closed shade can soften the light nicely, but that doesn’t automatically make it suitable for reading or working. For a reading corner, a floor lamp with a reading light or an adjustable head is far more practical. A standard uplighter floor lamp, on the other hand, directs most of its light upwards and provides indirect room lighting.
Also check whether a bulb is included. Several of the models featured here are supplied without a bulb.
A floor lamp with an E27 fitting takes a compatible bulb with an E27 cap. But the fitting alone tells you nothing about brightness, colour temperature or energy consumption. You also need to check the stated maximum wattage and the lamp’s design.
With the Brilliant model, the main light uses an E27 fitting, while the separate reading arm is designed for an E14 bulb. On other models, such as the Keli floor lamp, the E27 fitting has a maximum wattage of 40 W.
The common E27 fitting gives you a wide choice of LED bulbs. That means you can select warm white light for the living room, neutral white for your home office or a dimmable bulb – provided the lamp and bulb are compatible.
With a living room floor lamp that has a shade, make sure the shade doesn’t glare at eye level. An arc lamp can direct light over a seating area, but it needs enough space and a stable base.
A tall lamp must stand securely and level. Particularly lightweight models or lamps with a long-reaching arm shouldn’t be placed in walkways or areas where they could easily be knocked over. With a natural model that has a rice-paper shade, keep it away from heat sources, as natural fibres can be flammable.
The Keli Straight Floor Lamp is 150 cm tall and has a base with a 20 cm diameter. Its steel-and-concrete construction is designed for stable positioning. Even so, the lamp should stand on a level surface and be protected from moisture.
A wooden floor lamp or one with a paper or rice-paper shade brings a natural look to a room. However, these materials need a dry environment and shouldn’t be cleaned with harsh products. Metal models can usually be wiped down with a soft, dry cloth.
All the models we’ve selected require self-assembly. Before ordering, check that the assembly area is easily accessible and that the instructions and all necessary parts are included. Work on the electrical connection must only be carried out by a suitably qualified professional.

Place the lamp on a level, stable surface and keep it away from curtains, radiators and other heat sources. Always unplug the lamp before cleaning or changing the bulb. Never exceed the maximum wattage shown on the rating plate.
For the living room, warm white LED light is often a good choice. In a home office, a more neutral colour temperature can work well, depending on your personal preference. A floor lamp for the bedroom should be positioned so that the switch is within reach from the bed or seating area, without the cable becoming a trip hazard.
For most living areas, around 150 to 180 cm works well. However, the right height depends on the size of the room, your seating and the shape of the shade. Next to a sofa, the lamp shouldn’t block the walkway or shine directly into your eyes.
Any bulb with an E27 cap will fit. Before you buy, check the maximum wattage, the bulb shape and whether the bulb you want is dimmable. If the lamp has multiple fittings, each one may have its own requirements.
The consumption depends mainly on the bulb you use, its wattage and how many hours a day it’s on. An LED bulb typically uses less power than a traditional bulb for a similar level of brightness. The key details are on the packaging and depend on how long you use the lamp.
