Buy a Floor Lamp: A Guide to Light, Style and a Stable Base

A floor lamp can add extra brightness to your living room, bedroom, children’s room or home office, while also serving as a decorative feature. However, your choice shouldn’t be based solely on colour or shade shape. Labels like “modern”, “Japanese” or “glamorous” tell you very little about whether a lamp will be practical and safe to use in its intended spot.

Three typical buying mistakes crop up particularly often:

  • Underestimating the size: A tall floor lamp with a wide shade needs more floor space than product photos suggest. Before you buy, compare the height, shade diameter and base width with the space you have available.
  • Misunderstanding “dimmable”: Many lamps don’t have a built-in dimmer. With the Moki model, the product description states that dimming is possible using an external dimmer, which is not supplied. What’s more, the bulb, fitting and dimmer all need to be compatible.
  • The bulb isn’t included: Several models in this selection are supplied without a bulb. So you need to check the fitting, maximum wattage and desired colour temperature before ordering.

These parameters should be decided before you buy

1. Height, footprint and placement

A tall floor lamp of around 145 to 158 cm can be placed next to a sofa, armchair or chest of drawers. But the overall height isn’t the only thing that matters. A tripod model often needs a larger footprint because of its three legs, compared with a lamp that has a flat round base.

For a reading corner, the shade shouldn’t direct light straight into your eyes. With a reading lamp, the position of the switch is also important. A switch on the cable can be hard to reach behind a sofa. With a floor lamp that has pull cords, the controls are right on the shade instead.

2. Fitting, wattage and bulb

The fitting determines which bulbs you can use. An E27 floor lamp is suitable for many common LED bulbs. Even so, you still need to pay attention to the maximum wattage. Depending on the model, the figures in this selection range from 40, 60 or 100 watts. The Beliani WADI uses three E14 fittings, each with a maximum of 25 watts.

LED bulbs can have a lower power consumption than older bulbs for the same brightness. So for running costs, it’s not just the wattage that matters, but also how many hours a day you use the lamp and your electricity tariff. A warm colour temperature of around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin is often chosen for living rooms and bedrooms; for a workspace, a more neutral colour temperature can make sense.

3. Material, light effect and care

A floor lamp with a fabric shade usually creates a softer, more diffused light than an open metal shade. However, fabric, paper and bamboo can be more sensitive to heat and moisture. With the Moki model, the materials are listed as wood and cotton; the paper shade should be kept away from heat sources.

A metal floor lamp can generally be cleaned with a soft cloth. On chrome-plated surfaces, you should avoid abrasive cleaning products. A wooden floor lamp can complement Scandinavian or Japanese-inspired interiors beautifully thanks to its natural surface, but it also needs a dry, level spot.

For all indoor lamps, the following applies: the lamp should stand on a stable, level surface, the cable must not create a trip hazard, and the stated maximum bulb wattage must not be exceeded. Models with an IP20 rating are intended for dry indoor spaces only.

Frequently asked questions about floor lamps

How tall should a floor lamp be next to a sofa?

That depends on the seat height, shade shape and intended use. Models between 145 and 158 cm often work well as general room lighting. For reading, the light outlet should be positioned so that neither the shade nor the bulb causes glare. So before you buy, the seating position and shade height are more important than a one-size-fits-all ideal height.

Which floor lamp is suitable for the bedroom?

A floor lamp in the bedroom should give off sufficiently soft, glare-free light and stand in a safe, low-traffic spot. A fabric shade or an enclosed shade can make the light effect gentler. For small rooms, narrow feet or a compact round base are usually more practical than a wide tripod frame.

How much does it cost to run a floor lamp?

You can estimate the costs using this formula: Power in kilowatts × daily usage hours × electricity price × days of use. For example, a 10-watt LED bulb used for four hours a day consumes 0.04 kWh per day. For an accurate calculation, you should take into account the actual wattage of the bulb and your current tariff.
