A folding hand trolley can make it much easier to transport shopping, gardening tools, camping gear or laundry. In practice, however, the stated load capacity isn’t the only thing that matters. The folded size, wheel design, brake function and materials must also suit the way you plan to use it.
If you focus only on a large capacity or a high weight limit, you may overlook important limitations. The points below will help you compare a folding trolley or a space-saving storage solution objectively.
A trolley with a 150-litre capacity isn’t automatically designed to carry 150 kilograms. Volume describes the available storage space, while the maximum load capacity tells you how heavy the load can be. You should also distribute the weight evenly to prevent the trolley from tipping or putting too much strain on one side of the wheels.
Large wheels and a sturdy fabric tub make a trolley easier to pull across grass, gravel or firm woodland paths. Steep slopes, high kerbs and uneven surfaces can still be a problem, though. Even an off-road hand trolley should only be used on stable ground and within its stated load limit.
A trolley may fold down neatly but still require several steps to set up. Check whether the frame locks securely, whether the handle is long enough, and whether the trolley will fit in your boot or designated storage space. With a folding pull-along trolley, it’s also important to check that the folding mechanism is protected against accidental collapse.
A folding shopping trolley with a 25-kilogram load capacity may be enough for light shopping or smaller household tasks. Models rated for 100 to 120 kilograms are better suited to carrying gardening materials, crates of drinks or camping gear. Never exceed the manufacturer’s stated limit.
Also look out for:
Larger-diameter wheels usually handle small bumps more easily than narrow furniture castors. If you’re choosing a hand trolley with brakes, check whether the brakes are intended for parking only. This is the case with many folding outdoor models. A parking brake isn’t a substitute for careful use on slopes.
Oxford fabric with a PE coating may be more resistant to splashes and abrasion than simple, uncoated fabric. That doesn’t mean the trolley is permanently waterproof, though. Removable fabric bags and wheels make cleaning easier.
A folding garden trolley should be stored somewhere dry. For laundry, smooth, wipe-clean materials are more practical. A folding laundry basket should also stand securely when fully loaded.
Why it suits this type of user: With a capacity of 42.5 litres, a load limit of 25 kg and folded dimensions of 45.5 x 45.5 x 8 cm, this trolley is suitable for shopping, smaller amounts of tools and storage in tight spaces.
The clearly stated load limit helps prevent you from mistaking its compact design for a heavy-duty trolley. According to the product information, this model isn’t designed for stairs or high kerbs.
Weighs 2.65 kg, with an extendable handle 97.5 cm high and a folded depth of just 8 cm.
Why it suits this type of user: The two compartments make it easy to separate, for example, light and dark fabrics. The lid keeps the contents out of sight, while the bamboo design works well in living rooms, bedrooms or utility rooms.
The dimensions of 52 x 32 x 63 cm and stated capacity of 100 litres make it easy to understand how much it can hold. It’s designed for storing laundry, not carrying heavy loads.
100 litres of capacity, two separate compartments, a lid and a foldable design.
Why it suits this type of user: With a capacity of 150 litres, a stated load limit of 120 kg and off-road wheels, this model is designed for camping, gardening, trips to the beach and carrying larger loads.
The product information distinguishes between 150 litres of storage space and a load capacity of 120 kg. The brakes are intended for parking only, not for use while the trolley is moving.
600D Oxford fabric with PE coating, a steel frame, removable wheels and a one-click handle.
Why it suits this type of user: This 45-litre laundry basket folds down to a height of 9 cm, making it suitable for flats, utility rooms, student accommodation or households with limited storage space.
The folded dimensions are clearly stated, so it’s easier to judge whether the basket will fit in a cupboard or under a shelf.
45 litres of capacity, PP and TPE/TPR materials, and a design that folds down in height.
We’ve put together a complete, regularly updated list of products that meet these strict selection criteria and fully comply with the safety regulations in force in the EU.
A load capacity of 25 to 40 kilograms is often enough for light shopping. For gardening materials, camping gear or crates of drinks, a model rated for 100 or 120 kilograms may be a better choice. The figure isn’t the only thing that matters: the stability of the ground and even weight distribution are important too.
Brakes can be useful when parking on gently sloping surfaces. However, check the manufacturer’s information: on many models, they’re designed to work as a parking brake only. When pulling a trolley downhill, don’t rely on the brake alone to control your speed.
Its lifespan depends on the load, the ground it’s used on, how it’s stored and how well it’s maintained. Overloading it, pulling it over high edges and storing it in damp conditions for long periods can put extra strain on the wheels, fabric and joints. Regularly checking the frame, wheels, locking mechanism and handle can help you spot wear early.
