Folding outdoor chairs: a buying guide for camping, balconies and gardens

A folding outdoor chair needs to do more than simply fold away quickly. Depending on how you plan to use it, low weight, a sturdy frame, a suitable seat height or an adjustable backrest may all matter. If you focus only on product photos and marketing claims, you could miss some important differences.

Common pitfalls when buying a folding outdoor chair

1. Low weight is mistaken for high load capacity

A lightweight folding camping chair is easy to carry when walking or trekking. However, low weight alone says nothing about the maximum load or how stable the chair is. What matters is the frame material, the design and the manufacturer’s stated static load capacity.

Do not exceed the stated load limit. Also, bear in mind that it is not the same as a dynamic load: sudden movements, dropping into the chair or leaning heavily to one side can put more strain on the frame than sitting still.

2. “Weatherproof” does not automatically mean suitable for permanent outdoor storage

Oxford fabric, mesh and aluminium are suitable for outdoor use, but they still need looking after. Rain, frost and direct sunlight can affect fabrics, coatings and metal joints. Dry a folding sun lounger after it gets wet, and store it somewhere dry if possible.

Also check whether the cover is removable, wipe-clean or can only be cleaned with a damp cloth. Not every model is suitable for machine washing.

3. Comfort features can make a chair harder to transport

An outdoor reclining chair with a headrest, padding and footrest offers more comfort when reclining than a compact trekking chair. However, it will often be heavier and take up more space when packed. A model with a reclining surface around 1.5 to 2 metres long needs considerably more room in your car or shed than a small folding chair.

Before buying, think about whether you’ll mainly use the chair in the garden, on the balcony, at the beach or on longer walks.

Technical details to compare

Weight and packed size

For backpacking, a weight of under one kilogram is particularly useful. Packed size matters just as much. A portable camping chair with a small carry bag is easier to stow in a rucksack or on a bike.

For balconies, gardens and campsites, a larger chair may be fine. If you’re considering a camping chair with a headrest, also check that its packed size will fit in your boot or the storage space you have in mind.

Frame and footprint

Aluminium frames keep weight down and are common on many outdoor chairs. Depending on the design, steel frames may weigh more but can provide a sturdy base. The material is not the only thing to consider: the frame shape and the number of points in contact with the ground matter too.

Rubberised or non-slip feet can help the chair grip on firm surfaces. Even so, always open a folding outdoor chair fully and place it on level, stable ground.

Seat height, backrest and adjustability

A low seat can be comfortable for relaxing, but some people may find it harder to get up from. An adjustable garden chair with several backrest positions is useful for sitting, reading and reclining. For a folding sun lounger, also check whether it can be set completely flat and whether the leg rest is securely supported.

Terms such as “ergonomic” are not very helpful without specific measurements. Check the seat width and height, the length of the reclining surface and the support provided for your head, back and legs.

Care and safe use

Before each use, make sure the chair is fully open. Check that all the feet are in contact with the ground at the same time and that the locking mechanisms are securely engaged. Avoid uneven surfaces and sideways pressure, and don’t sit on the armrests or footrests.

To help your chair last longer:

  • Wipe off dirt with a damp cloth.
  • Let wet fabric dry completely.
  • Wipe metal parts dry after rain.
  • Store the chair somewhere cool and dry, away from prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Regularly check the frame, seams, cover and joints for damage.

FAQs about folding outdoor chairs

Which folding outdoor chair is best for trekking?

For trekking and longer walks, low weight and a compact packed size are essential. A lightweight camping chair with an aluminium frame and carry bag is usually a better fit than a padded sun lounger. You’ll still need to consider the maximum load capacity and how stable the chair will be on uneven ground.

How long does a folding outdoor chair last?

There’s no set lifespan. It depends on the load, how often you use the chair, how you store it and how well you look after it. Drying it regularly, cleaning it properly and keeping within the stated load limit can help reduce wear. Check damaged joints, tears or bent frames before using the chair again.

What are the ongoing costs of a folding outdoor chair?

There are usually no direct running costs. However, you may need to pay for replacement parts, a protective cover or a new seat cover. Models with padding and a sun canopy may also need more care than a simple folding chair for the balcony or garden.
