A folding storage stool can replace several pieces of furniture: it can be used as an extra seat, footrest, storage stool or compact storage bench. At the same time, models vary considerably in terms of dimensions, weight capacity, storage volume and folding mechanism.
Anyone who only considers colour and upholstery will often overlook important details. Three typical purchasing pitfalls are:
Start by measuring the available floor space. A compact storage footstool measuring around 38 × 38 cm will usually fit beside a sofa, under a desk or in a narrow hallway. A longer storage bench measuring around 110 cm, on the other hand, is better suited to the end of a bed or beneath a window.
Height is also relevant. Around 37 to 38 cm corresponds to the standard seat or footrest height of many models. If you intend to use it as a coffee table, check whether the surface is specifically designed for this purpose. A padded stool with a soft lid is not automatically suitable for use as a table.
Specific litre measurements can help when assessing the interior space. The product specifications for individual models range from 38 l to 131 l, for example. A small lidded pouffe is sufficient for remote controls, books or small accessories. Blankets, cushions or bed linen require considerably more volume.

A cover made from polyester, linen-look fabric or teddy fleece affects both the feel and the level of care required. Polyester can often be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. Teddy fleece can be vacuumed regularly using a soft brush attachment. Velvet makes a strong visual impression, but should be protected from moisture, sharp objects and direct heat.
Many storage benches use MDF panels or comparable wood-based materials to provide stability. Metal reinforcements at the corners of the lid can offer additional protection. Foam padding makes the surface more comfortable, but on its own does not indicate how well it will retain its shape over time.
Also check whether the stool is intended for indoor use only. MDF and textile covers are generally not suitable for damp rooms, balconies or outdoor use.
