A folding transport trolley can make it much easier to move shopping, crates of drinks, luggage or garden accessories. However, models vary considerably in load capacity, wheel design, folded dimensions and stability. A high capacity in litres alone tells you little about how practical a trolley will be day to day.
Before buying, look out for these three common marketing pitfalls:
The stated maximum load is an important guide, but it shouldn’t be considered in isolation. Check whether the weight needs to be distributed evenly and whether the figure applies to a folding hand trolley, a platform or a trolley with a fabric compartment.
A maximum load of 25 to 70 kg may be enough for light shopping. For crates of drinks, tools or heavy bags of garden waste, a model with a higher load capacity is a better choice. Even a heavy-duty transport trolley shouldn’t be overloaded. The risk of tipping increases on slopes, cobbles and soft ground.
A transport trolley with wheels will usually roll easily on paved paths. For grass, gravel, sand or woodland paths, however, wider wheels with good ground clearance are an advantage. Swivelling front wheels make it easier to manoeuvre, while larger PU or rubber wheels can absorb bumps more effectively.
Also check the following:
A folding camping trolley should be easy to move over the type of ground you plan to use it on, without the load shifting around too much.
The folded size determines whether the trolley will fit in your boot, cellar or utility room. A lightweight transport trolley is easier to carry, but may be less stable under a heavy load than a model with a steel frame.
An aluminium frame is generally designed to keep the overall weight down. Steel frames often offer greater structural rigidity, but make the trolley heavier. A height-adjustable handle can make a trolley easier to use for people of different heights. Make sure the handle locks securely when extended.
The models below are grouped by intended use and technical specifications. Before ordering, also check the product details, delivery terms and safety information currently shown.
Why it suits this need: With a capacity of 42.5 litres, an unladen weight of 2.65 kg and folded dimensions of 45.5 × 45.5 × 8 cm, this trolley is suited to smaller shopping trips and household items.
The 25 kg load capacity and intended use on flat surfaces are clearly stated, making it easier to judge how much you can realistically carry.
Lightweight, with a 42.5-litre capacity and a folded depth of just 8 cm.
Why it suits this need: Use it as a sack truck with a load capacity of 80 kg or as a platform trolley with a capacity of 150 kg, making it suitable for a range of transport jobs.
The load limit is stated separately for each mode. The integrated parking brake is for keeping the trolley stationary, not for braking while moving.
An aluminium frame, height-adjustable handle and two modes of use, each with a clearly stated load capacity.
Why it suits this need: With a capacity of 300 litres, PU wheels with bearings and two brakes, this trolley is designed for camping equipment, garden supplies and larger shopping trips.
The 132 kg load limit, folded dimensions of 35 × 26 × 80 cm and guidance on using the brakes are all clearly specified.
Plenty of capacity, side pockets, cup holders and removable wheels for cleaning or replacement.
Why it suits this need: This folding sack truck weighs 3.5 kg and, according to the product details, can carry up to 80 kg. It’s well suited to parcels or crates of drinks.
The unladen weight, maximum load, handle heights and folded width of 5.7 cm are listed separately.
A handle with three height settings, TPR wheels with ball bearings and wheels that fold away automatically.

A folding hand trolley will stay in good working order if you regularly check its joints, wheels and base. Remove sand, soil and small stones from the wheel housings. Let fabric compartments dry completely before folding the trolley away. Where possible, store metal frames somewhere dry.
Also remember to:
A capacity of 25 to 70 kg is often enough for smaller shopping trips. Crates of drinks, tools or camping equipment call for a higher load capacity. The key is to check that the stated limit suits the mode of use and the type of ground.
For camping and the beach, look for a spacious interior, wide wheels and a sturdy frame. Even a large folding camping trolley can be difficult to pull over sand. Choose wide tyres and spread the load evenly.
Clean the wheels and joints regularly, make sure fabric parts are completely dry and store the trolley somewhere dry. Before heavier use, check the wheel fixings, seams, locks and frame.
