Buying a food processor: choose the right functions, sizes and models for your household

A food processor can chop vegetables, grate cheese, mince herbs or knead dough. Even so, not every appliance is right for every household. If you only chop onions occasionally, you will need different functions from a family that regularly processes larger quantities. A low price or a long list of accessories alone also says little about how practical an appliance will be in everyday use.

Typical buying and marketing pitfalls

1. Confusing wattage with actual performance

A high wattage rating may sound impressive at first. However, it mainly describes the motor’s electrical input power, not necessarily the processing speed, durability or quality of the results. When choosing a model, also consider speed settings, pulse function, blade shape, bowl size and recommended operating time.

A compact mini chopper with 400 to 550 watts may be sufficient for herbs, onions and smaller quantities. For dough, hard ingredients or frequent use, a suitable dough hook, a sturdy drive unit and the right accessories are more important than wattage alone.

2. Assessing accessory lists without considering realistic use

A multifunction food processor with numerous attachments may seem versatile. In practice, every accessory has to be assembled, stored and cleaned. So consider whether you really need a food processor for slicing and grating, a kneading function, a blender or simply a kitchen chopper.

With slicing discs, it should be clear which cutting styles are available. A food processor with grating discs is useful for carrots, cucumbers or cheese, while a stainless steel blade is better suited to chopping, mixing and puréeing.

3. Considering cleaning and safety too late

Hidden edges, hard-to-reach gaps and components that are not dishwasher-safe can make everyday use more difficult. Look for removable parts, a clear lid-locking mechanism and dishwasher-safe components. The motor base of the appliances mentioned must not be immersed in water.

Sharp blades and discs should only be handled by the edge or by the handles provided for this purpose. Always use the pusher with a vegetable slicer; hands or cutlery must never be placed into the feed chute while the appliance is running.

The most important parameters before buying

Assess capacity realistically

The stated bowl size does not always correspond to the usable working capacity. Different maximum fill levels may apply to liquids and dry ingredients. For one person or small portions, 0.5 to 0.83 litres is often sufficient. Families are more likely to benefit from around 1.3 to 2.1 litres of working capacity. Large models with a separate mixing bowl are suitable for more extensive preparation, but require more worktop and storage space.

Choose functions based on your main tasks

  • Mini chopper: suitable for onions, herbs, nuts or smaller quantities of vegetables.
  • Food processor: depending on the model, combines chopping, slicing, grating, kneading and puréeing.
  • Vegetable slicer: useful if you often need evenly cut slices, strips or grated ingredients.
  • Electric food processor: provides motorised assistance and is more convenient than a manual appliance for regular use.
  • Manual kitchen chopper: requires no electricity and may be sufficient for small portions or use on the go.

Check the materials, controls and cleaning requirements

Stainless steel blades are designed for chopping and mixing tasks in many appliances. Plastic and glass bowls differ in terms of weight, impact resistance and handling. Two speed settings plus a pulse function are practical, as they allow you to control short processing intervals and achieve different textures more effectively.

When it comes to cleaning, read the product description carefully: “dishwasher-safe” usually applies only to removable parts, not the motor unit. The recommended position in the dishwasher, such as the top rack, may also be relevant.

Food processor FAQ

Which food processor is suitable for small kitchens?

For limited storage space, consider compact models with a bowl capacity of around 0.5 to 1.3 litres. Integrated cable storage, stackable accessories and a footprint that can remain permanently on the worktop are also important. If you only process onions, herbs or nuts, you do not necessarily need a large multifunction appliance.

How long does a food processor last?

Its lifespan depends on how often it is used, the ingredients processed, cleaning and compliance with the recommended operating times. Hard ingredients, overfilling and long periods of uninterrupted operation can put greater strain on the motor and blades. Observe the maximum fill level and the manufacturer’s instructions. Clean sharp blades carefully and do not continue using them if they show visible damage.

Does an electric food processor use a lot of electricity?

Energy consumption depends on the motor power and the actual operating time. A 700-watt appliance that runs for only a few minutes generally uses a manageable amount of electricity when used occasionally. When making your decision, therefore, do not just consider the wattage. Also think about whether the food processor can replace several individual appliances and how often you will use it.
