Garden lanterns help you find your way along paths, highlight plants or seating areas, and add a decorative light source to your garden lighting. The choice ranges from solar garden lights and LED lanterns to candle lanterns made from wood, rattan or metal. But not every style is right for every location.
Three common buying mistakes are particularly likely to lead to disappointment:
The IP rating describes protection against solid objects and water. IP44 is designed to protect against splashing water from different directions. Even so, an outdoor lantern with this rating should not be left unprotected in heavy rain for long periods. For more exposed areas, a higher rating such as IP65 is technically better suited, according to the product specifications, provided the fitting and connection are designed for it too.
With solar ground lights, it’s also important to make sure the solar panel isn’t shaded by leaves, walls or dense planting. Models with a ground spike or sturdy base are well suited to paths. Freestanding lanterns with a carry handle or USB outdoor lamps are often more flexible on balconies and patios.
Solar garden lights don’t need a fixed power connection. Check the charging time, battery type and stated operating time. For example, the Aigostar model has a stated charging time of around 4 to 6 hours and an operating time of 8 to 12 hours under suitable conditions. RGB lighting is best for decorative accents, while warm white light tends to be more subtle around seating areas and paths.
USB outdoor lamps can be powered by a USB adapter or power bank, so you can place them away from a socket. Before buying, check whether a power bank or mains adapter is included and how the lamp is charged.
Batteries aren’t always included with battery-powered LED lanterns. Check the battery type, whether the batteries can be replaced and the recommended storage conditions. An LED candle doesn’t have a naked flame, but that doesn’t automatically make it suitable for heavy rain.
The dimensions determine whether a light will work on a balcony table, beside a garden path or as a focal point on your patio. A lantern measuring 60 to 77 cm in height takes up more space and should stand on a level, stable surface where it can’t tip over. Smaller models are easier to move around or hang up.
Natural variations in colour and texture are possible with wood and bamboo lanterns. These are due to the material and don’t indicate a product fault. According to the respective product details, Beliani wooden lanterns shouldn’t be left outdoors for long periods. With candle lanterns that have glass inserts, there’s another important point: never leave a flame unattended, and keep it away from textiles, children and pets.

Choose a level, stable and non-flammable surface. For solar ground lights, keep the panel as unshaded as possible. Keep candle lanterns away from curtains, dry plants and other flammable materials. Never leave burning candles unattended, and keep wooden or rattan lanterns somewhere sheltered during prolonged wet weather.
How long they stay lit depends on battery capacity, charge level, sunlight and temperature. The manufacturer’s stated operating time should therefore be treated as a guide for suitable conditions. Clean the solar panel regularly and remove leaves or dust, so the available charging area isn’t unnecessarily reduced.
LED lanterns usually use relatively little energy when switched on. Solar lights don’t add to your electricity bill, while USB and mains-powered models depend on how you use them and their power source. For battery-powered lanterns, you should also factor in the cost of replacement batteries and the effort involved in changing them.
