A garden table should fulfil several roles in everyday life: It can serve as a dining table in the garden, a surface for items on the patio or a compact balcony table. When buying, however, colour and design are not the only considerations. Vague material specifications, missing load ratings and impractical dimensions often mean that an outdoor table later wobbles, takes up too much space or requires extensive maintenance.
This buying guide explains what private households in Germany should look for in 2026 and which garden table models suit different living and usage situations.
A weatherproof garden table is not automatically suitable for permanent exposure to moisture, frost and strong UV radiation without protection. Depending on their construction, aluminium, metal, wood-effect finishes and glass also require suitable care and storage. Water can, for example, enter hollow profiles. On coated surfaces, aggressive cleaning products can damage the protective layer.
Therefore, pay attention to specific details about the material, coating, UV resistance, rust protection and recommended winter protection. For many models, using a cover or storing the table in a dry place can extend its service life.
The statement “seats six” says little about actual seating comfort. Table length, depth, legroom and the position of the table legs are what matter. A 180 × 90 cm patio table generally offers more freedom of movement than a compact table with a similar stated seating capacity.
Before buying, measure not only the space required for the table, but also the area needed for chairs and movement around them. For a small balcony, a round balcony table with a diameter of 69 to 70 cm may be more practical than an elongated table.
A folding garden table saves storage space, but it is not always lightweight. Check the net weight, folded dimensions, locking mechanism and ease of carrying. Despite its comparatively light material, a large aluminium garden table can weigh more than 30 kg, while a camping table with a separate tabletop and frame is considerably easier to transport.
Aluminium is lightweight, does not rust like unprotected steel and is frequently used for outdoor tables. Coated surfaces should be cleaned with mild soapy water and a soft cloth. With plastic or Polywood tabletops, regular oiling is generally unnecessary, but hot pots should never be placed directly on the surface.
Acacia wood offers a natural grain and a greater overall weight. Oiled wooden surfaces require regular maintenance, particularly before and after the outdoor season. Variations in colour, knots and different grain patterns are natural characteristics of solid wood.
Metal with a powder-coated finish can be suitable for balcony tables. Nevertheless, the surface should be dried after rain and checked for scratches, as damaged areas may be more susceptible to corrosion.
Glass is easy to wipe clean but can be damaged by strong impacts. For a garden table with a glass tabletop, pay attention to the maximum load, stability and recommended frost protection.
When comparing the stated maximum load capacity, do not consider only the weight of crockery. Heavy plant pots or concentrated loads in a single spot can also affect stability. The table should stand on a firm, level surface. With large tabletops, strong winds may create an additional risk of tipping.
Folding mechanisms must be fully engaged. The tabletop is not intended to be used as a seat or ladder. Barbecues, hot pots and naked flames should be kept away from metal and plastic surfaces.
Why it is a good fit: The square tabletop seats two people and is ideal for small homes, balconies or use as an additional surface.
The stated dimensions, 6.8 kg weight and folding design make it easier to plan the required floor and storage space.
Wood-effect MDF tabletop, steel frame, 60 × 60 cm surface and foldable construction.
Why it is a good fit: The round bistro table is designed for two people and folds away when space is limited.
The technical specifications state dimensions of 70 × 70 × 75 cm, a net weight of 4 kg and a maximum load of 40 kg. The folding mechanism requires no assembly.
Powder-coated iron construction, UV-resistant finish and compact storage.
Why it is a good fit: The extendable tabletop seats six to eight people, making it ideal for larger gatherings on the patio or in the garden.
The usable length is specified in two configurations. The specifications also include a maximum load of 160 kg, a height of 77 cm and an assembly time of approximately 20 to 40 minutes.
Aluminium frame, grey wood-effect finish and flexible seating capacity for up to eight people.
Why it is a good fit: Weighing approximately 1.25 kg and measuring just 16 × 8 × 57 cm when packed, this outdoor table is designed for camping, fishing and hiking.
The packed size, weight and static load capacity of approximately 20 kg are clearly specified. Before use, the frame, cross braces and tabletop must be correctly locked into place.
Aluminium alloy, X-shaped frame structure and non-slip nylon feet.

That depends on the chair width and the level of comfort you want. For four people, rectangular models measuring approximately 120 to 140 cm in length are often practical. Also measure the required space with the chairs pulled out. For two people, a small garden table with a side length or diameter of 60 to 70 cm may be sufficient.
That depends on the material and the manufacturer’s instructions. A powder-coated finish, aluminium or a moisture-resistant tabletop may be suitable for outdoor use, but none of these fully protects the table from frost, persistent rain and storms. Only fold the table away when it is dry and store it in a sheltered place whenever possible. In strong winds, a lightweight table should be moved indoors or to a protected area.
As a rule, use a soft cloth, water and a mild cleaning product. Depending on the finish, wooden surfaces may require regular re-oiling. Glass should be wiped dry after rain or snow. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals and pressure washers if the care instructions warn that they could damage the surface. Also check the screws, feet and folding locks regularly.
