Buying a Glass Set: A Guide for Everyday Use, Guests and Special Occasions

A glass set should work well for everyday use, complement your table setting and require as little maintenance as possible. Even so, unclear product details and eye-catching marketing claims can quickly lead to disappointing purchases. Capacity, set size and suitability for hot drinks are particularly often misjudged.

Common pitfalls when buying

1. Capacity is confused with usable volume

A stated capacity of 300 or 450 ml generally describes the maximum volume. However, when serving water, juice or cocktails, some space is left below the rim. A 30-cl glass is therefore suitable for standard servings, while a 52-cl glass offers more room for ice cubes, long drinks or large soft drinks.

For a set of drinking glasses for everyday use, around 25 to 35 cl is often practical. For water and juice in a family household, you should also check whether the glasses are comfortable to hold and stand securely.

2. Design is valued more highly than ease of care

Gold rims, metallic coatings or coloured surfaces can define the look of your table. However, they are not automatically suitable for every dishwasher cycle. The care instructions should be followed for decorated glasses. For example, the MyGift set of black and gold champagne glasses is stated to be dishwasher-safe, but hand washing is recommended to protect the gold finish.

If you regularly need to wash a large number of glasses, look specifically for dishwasher-safe glasses and also check whether this applies to the entire surface or only to the glass material.

3. “For hot and cold drinks” is not a given for every glass

A standard water glass or classic wine glass is not automatically suitable for coffee, tea or boiling-hot drinks. Sudden changes in temperature can damage glass. For hot drinks, explicitly designed double-walled glasses or coffee glasses with the appropriate manufacturer’s specification are a sensible choice.

Borosilicate glass is not a free pass for every temperature either. Instructions such as “not oven-safe”, “not suitable for microwave use” or “avoid thermal shock” should be taken into account before buying and when using the product.

The most important buying criteria at a glance

Capacity and glass shape

  • Water glasses and juice glasses: 24 to 35 cl are suitable for breakfast, lunch and guests.
  • Tumbler glasses: Low, wide shapes are suitable for water, juice, cocktails and, in some cases, whisky.
  • Wine glass set: A larger volume can be useful for red wine, although the amount poured should still remain moderate.
  • Champagne glasses: Flutes and stemless designs differ considerably in terms of stability and appearance.
  • Whisky glass set: A capacity of around 30 cl provides room for the drink and, if required, ice or chilling stones.
  • Coffee glasses and espresso glasses: Small capacities between 8 and 22 cl are intended for espresso or cold brew; larger models are more suitable for lattes, tea or filter coffee.

Number of glasses

A two-piece set is suitable for couples, smaller households or as an addition to an existing collection. Four to six glasses provide more flexibility for families, guests and celebrations. Hospitality businesses, bars and caterers should also consider the availability of additional purchases, consistent dimensions and whether the glasses can be stacked.

Material, stability and safety

Most of the models considered here are made of glass. This provides a clear view of the colour and contents, but also means there is a risk of breakage if the glasses are knocked or dropped. Look for:

  • a stable stem or broad base,
  • an evenly finished rim,
  • information on suitability for hot or cold drinks,
  • instructions regarding microwaves, ovens and dishwashers,
  • safe storage out of the reach of young children.

The care instructions are particularly important for glasses with coatings or metallic elements. Damaged or chipped glasses should no longer be used.

Glass Set FAQ

Which glasses should be included in a versatile glass set?

For many households, water glasses with a capacity of 25 to 35 cl are a sensible starting point. Depending on your drinking habits, you can add a wine glass set, whisky glasses, champagne glasses or coffee glasses. Capacity, quantity and the care required are the key considerations.

Are all glasses dishwasher-safe?

No. Suitability depends on the individual product. Some models are explicitly described as dishwasher-safe, while hand washing is recommended for others. For gold rims, metallic surfaces and delicate decorations, the dishwasher may alter the finish over time. The specific manufacturer’s instructions should therefore take priority.

How long does a glass set last?

There is no single answer regarding service life. It depends on the thickness of the glass, use, cleaning and storage. Avoid hard knocks, forcing the glasses when stacking them and sudden changes in temperature. Glasses with cracks, chips or damaged rims should be replaced for safety reasons.
