Which teams need to understand the difference?

Teams that need access to robot data

If you’re developing navigation, sensor fusion or your own perception software, you’ll need documented access to the data and control functions required. According to its Go2 FAQ, Unitree only opens the interface for secondary development on the EDU and higher versions.

Teams carrying out real-world mobility tests

If you mainly want to test pre-configured locomotion and obstacle avoidance in the intended indoor or outdoor environments, the Go2 Pro is worth considering. But if your tests involve your own ROS or SDK software, this alone isn’t enough to justify your choice.

Labs planning to add extensions

For additional computers, cameras or other attachments, the interfaces available on the specific configuration on offer are what matter. Unitree’s documentation on extension hardware doesn’t prove that every Go2 model includes the dock or accessories you need.

Which requirements determine the right version?

Go2 Pro

A good fit if: Your team wants to test pre-configured mobility and obstacle avoidance features in a real-world test environment.

Limitation: Unitree’s Go2 FAQ says the Pro does not open an interface for secondary development; the presence of sensors does not guarantee access for your own software.

Go2 EDU

A good fit if: Your project depends on your own navigation, ROS 2, SDK development or access to robot data. MYBOTSHOP and QUADRUPED Robotics document a ROS 2 stack for the Go2 EDU.

Bear in mind: The dock, additional hardware and documented software version must match the EDU configuration you order.

Simulation or trial unit

A good fit if: Your decision still depends on a specific data stream, ROS environment or extension.

Limitation: A simulation is no substitute for testing the hardware and firmware configuration on offer in the intended test area.

Criteria What to check before buying Who should pay particular attention
Programming and data access Get written confirmation that the version on offer supports the access you need, including SDK, ROS, LiDAR, video and odometry interfaces. Check the firmware and any access requirements too. If my own navigation relies on robot data, I want to be able to use the data and control functions I need in my software. For around 50% of consumers, this access is the top priority.
Mobility during testing Test the specific device on the intended surfaces and in the intended operating modes. Confirm whether the pre-configured features are enough or whether you’ll need your own control system. When testing outside a simulation, I want to see how locomotion and obstacle avoidance perform under my test conditions. These mobility tests are the top priority for around 30% of consumers.
Extensions and support Confirm what’s included and check the compatibility of the dock, power and data interfaces. Also establish who is responsible for documentation, spare parts and support. If additional hardware is part of my prototype, I need a suitable configuration and a clear point of contact for its operation. Around 20% of consumers put extensions and support first.

Which assumptions can make choosing more difficult?

  • Assuming that having sensors means you can access their data

LiDAR and obstacle avoidance on the Go2 Pro don’t mean your own ROS or SDK stack can use the sensor data. In its Go2 FAQ, Unitree excludes the Pro from the interface for secondary development.

Specify the data and functions you need as acceptance criteria for the exact version and firmware. If developing your own software is central to the project, look for an EDU configuration with the relevant documentation.

If you only discover an access restriction after buying, you may need to switch to a different hardware platform.

  • Assuming EDU guides apply to every Go2 configuration

The ROS 2 documentation from MYBOTSHOP and QUADRUPED Robotics relates to the Go2 EDU. Extension interfaces also depend on the specific dock and hardware configuration.

Check the guide against the model version, dock, additional computer, firmware and ports actually included.

Components that aren’t compatible can delay integration and the start of planned tests.

  • Treating low-level control like a standard test mode

The Go2 manual from MYBOTSHOP and QUADRUPED Robotics warns that low-level control can bypass built-in balance protection. If you’re using your own controllers, factor falls and damage to attached hardware into your test planning.

Plan a controlled test area, trained operators and the documented emergency procedure. Start gradually and without attachments.

  • Leaving data flows until the outdoor test

Image, audio and sensor data can contain personal information. MYBOTSHOP and QUADRUPED Robotics’ integrator documentation also notes that, when connected to the internet, login and other functional data may be sent to Unitree.

Before testing with personal data, document the data flows and check the applicable EU General Data Protection Regulation requirements with your data protection team. Find out which online features the specific configuration needs and which can be restricted.

A relevant brand to help guide you

Unitree

For this project, the version’s access permissions matter more than the brand name alone when choosing from the Go2 family.

  • Unitree’s Go2 SDK documentation includes interfaces for motion control, LiDAR, audio and video, as well as odometry.
  • According to Unitree’s Go2 FAQ, secondary development is reserved for the EDU and higher versions; the SDK feature list does not confirm equivalent access on the Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use LiDAR and video data from the Go2 Pro in my own software?

Don’t plan to use the Go2 Pro as a platform with open access for your own ROS or SDK software. Unitree states in its Go2 FAQ that the Pro doesn’t open an interface for secondary development; the documented SDK features alone don’t change that. For a data-driven project, ask for written confirmation that the specific EDU configuration on offer provides the access you need.

Which Go2 version should I consider for ROS 2 and my own navigation?

The Go2 EDU is the documented option for this project. MYBOTSHOP and QUADRUPED Robotics specifically describe a ROS 2 stack for the EDU, and their guide was last tested on 8 July 2025. Before ordering, check that the firmware, ROS environment and components you need are compatible with the configuration on offer.

Where can I find documentation and support for a Go2 project in Germany?

MYBOTSHOP and QUADRUPED Robotics provide documentation for the Go2 EDU, including ROS 2 resources. Terra Robotics offers technical support, training and maintenance options for its EDU, and stocks a replacement battery for the Go2 Air and Pro. Check with each supplier who is responsible for support and whether accessories are compatible with your exact version.

What should a team consider when using image, audio and sensor data in field tests?

If your test processes personal data and isn’t carried out solely for personal or household purposes, you must check the applicable data protection requirements. The EU General Data Protection Regulation covers the processing of personal data. Before testing, record what data the device and connected services collect or transmit, then check the necessary measures with your data protection team.
